12 Keys to Dreaming: Understanding God's Sacred Language of the Night

12 Keys to Dreaming: Understanding God's Sacred Language of the Night

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 7 April 2025

Dreams are not random spiritual noise — they are God's direct, symbolic, and purposeful communication with His people.

Dreams are one of God's primary languages, operating through symbols and carrying instructions, insight, foresight, and warnings for those who are spiritually positioned to receive them. Not every dream originates from God, yet no dream originates from the devil — understanding this distinction is the foundation of a mature prophetic life. These twelve keys unlock the theology of dreaming and reveal how to properly position yourself to receive, interpret, and act on what God speaks in the night.

Key One: Avoid Much Speaking

  • Excessive talking produces vain dreams that originate from the soul, not from God.
  • God does not speak vainly — every word He speaks carries redemptive, restorative, or instructive purpose.
  • A prophetic person is consumed with prayer and the burdens of others — they do not speak carelessly, and it is rare for them to say "God told me."

"It is absolutely important to avoid much speaking."

"God does not speak nonsense."

"People who talk too much dream too much and that will be from their own soul and it will not be from God."

Key Two: There Are No Demonic Dreams

  • Dreams are solely from God — the devil has no power to generate a dream because he holds no access to the interpretive language of dreams.
  • If Joseph asked "do not all interpretations come from God?" then the one who holds the interpretation controls the language itself.
  • Dreams that appear frightening are not demonic attacks — they are God's warnings revealing what has been operating against you.

"Dreams are solely from God."

"There are only revelations of what the devil is doing and also God's instruction — there are no demonic dreams."

Key Three: Dreams Are God's Language

  • Dreams operate in the realm of symbolism — it is God's nature to speak symbolically, and it has always been so.
  • Symbols are drawn from elements familiar to the receiver — God communicates through what people know, so they can understand what He is saying.
  • The devil does not speak symbolically — demonic communication is not symbolic in nature, which is another confirmation that the language of dreams belongs to God alone.

"God speaks symbolically. It is God's nature to speak symbolically. It is absolutely his nature to speak that way."

"Satan doesn't speak symbolically. No, demons don't. They can show you dark things but they don't operate or speak symbolically — it's not their nature."

Key Four: There Are Times You Won't Dream

  • Joseph only dreamed in his father's house — once placed in God's plan, he operated by prophetic insight rather than by dreams.
  • The absence of dreams does not mean spiritual attack or abandonment — it can mean you are already in God's plan and everything is on course.
  • When God has nothing to redirect, He will not speak — silence in dreams is itself a form of communication.

"The reason that you will not dream is because you are in God's plan."

"If you're not in God's plan, God will give you dreams to direct you."

Key Five: Dreams Are for Instructions

  • Joseph's betrothal to Mary, the flight to Egypt, and the return from Egypt were all directed by dream-instructions — demonstrating that dreams are fundamentally instructive.
  • A disobedient and rebellious person will find it difficult to receive dreams, because God will not waste instructive words on someone who will not follow them.
  • Every dream carries an instruction — a dream without a directive to act is a sign that God did not originate it.

"There is always an instruction tied to a dream — always."

Key Six: Dreams Provide Insight

  • Insight is in-depth knowledge about a situation, a person, or a thing — and dreams are one of God's vehicles for delivering it.
  • Insight through dreams is not merely for knowing — it is for doing, because every revelation God gives carries an embedded action.
  • Spiritual maturity allows a person to receive insight through brief, intentional rest — those who have developed themselves spiritually can close their eyes prayerfully and emerge with complete understanding.

"Dreams give you insight — in-depth insight. You know the mechanics and the function of things."

Key Seven: Dreams Provide Foresight

  • Foresight is the ability to see what is coming — and when God grants foresight in a dream, it is a call to position yourself accordingly.
  • God does not always provide day-to-day steps — when He shows you the destination, it means He is handling the present and you are already in the right place.
  • Joseph's foresight dream did not show him how he would arrive at his destiny — it showed him where he was going, and that was sufficient to carry him through every circumstance in between.

"Foresight gives you instructions to position yourself."

"If he shows me where I am going to be, it means he's taking care of where I am going. I don't have to worry about where I am."

Key Eight: Dreams Come to Give Warnings

  • God uses dreams to warn His people of dangers, spiritual attacks, and threats — and lives have been lost prematurely because warnings in dreams were ignored.
  • Warning dreams reveal what is already in operation — eating in a dream, for example, is not neutral but a warning of initiation that calls for immediate action.
  • When you do not understand the category of a dream, you may misread what God is telling you — familiarity with the nature of dream warnings is essential for proper response.

"Dreams come to give you warnings."

"If you don't get the interpretation, you may misread what God is telling you."

Key Nine: Dreams Are God Speaking

  • God declared in Numbers 12 that He makes Himself known to prophets in visions and speaks to them in dreams — these are described as "dark speeches," meaning symbolic language, but they are God Himself communicating.
  • Dreams are not a third-party message system — they are God speaking directly to the individual, without an intermediary.
  • Spiritual maturity and a calm, developed mind are prerequisites for consistently receiving God's voice in dreams.

"When I dream, it is God speaking."

"Dreams are for the mature."

"This is God speaking directly to you."

Key Ten: Location Can Determine Your Dreams

  • Certain locations carry spiritual openness — Jacob's encounter at Bethel, where a ladder reached to heaven and angels ascended and descended, was directly tied to the location where he laid his head.
  • There are locations in the spirit that are endorsed by God and locations that are spiritually blacklisted — discerning the difference before relocating is a matter of prayer, not preference.
  • Sleeping in a spiritually endorsed location can alter the entire trajectory of a person's future, just as Jacob's night at Bethel changed his life.

"Location can determine your dreams."

"There are locations in the spirit that are blacklisted, and there are locations in the spirit that God has endorsed."

"If you sleep in the right location, it can affect your whole future."

Key Eleven: Dreams Give You Access to the Angelic Realm

  • Physical encounters with angels are typically preceded by angelic appearances in dreams — Daniel recognized Gabriel in person because he had first seen him in a dream.
  • Dedication in prayer and spiritual diligence expands the doors through which God releases angelic access.
  • Jacob's dream encounter with angels at Bethel was the precursor to his physical wrestling match with an angel at the same location years later.

"Dreams give you access to the angelic realm."

"If you are dedicated in prayer, if you are diligent, it opens greater doors."

Key Twelve: God Can Work on You in Dreams

  • God does not only speak to you in dreams — He can actively transform you, remove what is not of Him, and impart what has been hidden in you, all while you sleep.
  • Countless Muslims in the Muslim world have come to Christ after a dream — having never heard the gospel, they were converted through God's direct work in the dream state.
  • Downloads of knowledge and wisdom received in dreams explain moments when a believer speaks with insight they cannot account for through natural learning.

"God can literally transform you in dreams."

"God can work on you while you sleep and bring out the good that was hidden in you."

Key Definitions

Insight — In-depth knowledge about something, a situation, or someone — given in a dream so that the receiver knows what to do, even when God does not explicitly state the required action.

Foresight — The ability to see what is coming; when God grants foresight in a dream, it is always a call to position oneself, not merely to observe.

Dark speeches — The term used in Numbers 12 to describe visions and dreams — symbolic, encoded language that is still God speaking, but requiring interpretation to understand.

Vain dreams — Dreams that originate from the soul rather than from God, produced by excessive talking, busyness, or spiritual immaturity — they carry no divine instruction.

Open heavens — A location or spiritual condition in which God speaks freely, the angelic realm is accessible, and prophetic dreaming is activated.

Closed heavens — A location or spiritual condition in which God's voice is suppressed and prophetic dreaming is restricted — a reason to seek God in prayer before choosing where to dwell.

Key Takeaways

  • Excessive speaking produces vain dreams — guarding your words is not merely a social discipline; it is a spiritual practice that protects the integrity of what God speaks to you in the night.
  • There are no demonic dreams — releasing this false doctrine liberates believers from fear and opens them to properly receive and interpret every dream as a message from God.
  • Every dream carries an instruction — a dream with no directive to act is a sign it did not originate with God; true God-given dreams always move you toward something.
  • The absence of dreams can mean you are in God's plan — spiritual maturity includes the ability to rest in God's silence and trust that not every season requires a new directive.
  • Location is a prophetic variable — where you sleep is a spiritual decision; seeking God before choosing a dwelling place can open or close the door to prophetic dreaming.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are you speaking too much about what "God told you" or "God showed you"? What would change in your life if you adopted a posture of fewer words and deeper listening?
  2. Have you been treating frightening dreams as demonic attacks rather than as God's warnings? Which warning dreams have you dismissed that deserve to be revisited and acted upon?
  3. Is there an area of your life where you have been waiting on a dream for direction, when God may actually be silent because you are already in His plan? What would it look like to trust His silence?
  4. Do you know where God can speak to you most clearly — and are you deliberately positioning yourself in that location to sleep prayerfully?
  5. Are there instructions tied to dreams you have already received that you have not yet acted on? What is holding you back from obeying what God has already shown you?

Prayers and Declarations

Before moving to a new location, pray this:

"Father, is this a location that you can speak to me?"

Pray this before sleeping:

"Father, as I sleep, remove anything from me that is not from you. Father, as I sleep, change, purify my heart, change my heart."

Congregational protective declaration:

"In the name of Jesus I block all demonic act against me and my family."

Prophetic cancellation declaration:

"But if it is not of God, it is cancelled in Jesus name."
