Activating the Spirit of Discernment: The Mark of Spiritual Maturity
Activating the Spirit of Discernment · Part 1 of 2
Discernment is not a tool you pick up — it is a spiritual capacity embedded within you that proves you have moved beyond milk into the fullness of Christ.
Discernment is one of the most misunderstood and most neglected dimensions of Christian life. It is not something you activate on demand or apply through investigation — it is a state of spiritual maturity that distinguishes the seasoned believer from the spiritual infant. Without it, believers cannot tell truth from deception, cannot find God's direction, and remain perpetually vulnerable to wrong choices in every area of life.
Teaching Overview
- Discernment is not something you use — it is an embedded spiritual capacity that becomes part of who you are, moved entirely by the Spirit of God and independent of opinion or investigation.
- The absence of discernment is the root cause of wrong marriages, failed business decisions, spiritual deception, and an inability to distinguish authentic ministry from false ministry.
- Spiritual maturity — defined by the exercise of one's senses to discern both good and evil — is the prerequisite for receiving the deeper wisdom of God and the strong meat of His Word.
- Being unskillful in the word of righteousness means remaining a spiritual infant, unable to move beyond the basics of salvation into the full counsel of Scripture for every area of life.
- The Church's greatest defence against false teaching is not the exposure of false teachers but the impartation of discernment — believers who are engaged with God will recognise what has no God without a word being spoken.

What Discernment Actually Is
- Discernment is the ability to distinguish — not through investigation or external input, but because it is embedded within the spirit.
- Discernment is moved by the Spirit of God Himself and is independent of opinion.
- Discernment is not something that comes upon you — it is something that is activated within you.
"There is nothing that influences discernment, discernment influences itself. In other words, discernment is moved by the spirit of God himself. Discernment is independent of opinion."
Discernment Demonstrated in Jesus
- Jesus did not investigate the woman at the well — He simply knew by discernment that she had five husbands and the man she was currently with was not hers.
- Jesus operated in a dimension of discernment so high that He appeared to be prophesying, yet He was not telling the future — He was unfolding what was already before Him.
- Discernment does not tell you the future — it reveals what is present, beyond what the natural eye can perceive.
"He did not prophesy by vision. He operated by discernment. He said, you have five husbands and the one you are living with now, he is not yours. It is not because he saw a vision. It is not because he had a voice telling him five husbands, one is not."
The Consequences of Lacking Discernment
- Wrong marriage partners, failed business dealings, and repeated dead ends are the fruit of a life lived without discernment.
- The children of Israel wandered around the same mountain because they lacked discernment — they could not distinguish direction.
- Without discernment, you cannot locate your breakthrough, your finances, or authentic ministry — and you will mistake the counterfeit for the real.
"You marry the wrong partner because you have no discernment. You end up in the wrong business deals because you have no discernment. Every turn you have ever taken that ended up in a dead end and you prayed for God to make a way where there was no way — discernment shows you where there is no way but there is a way."
Discernment and Spiritual Maturity
- Spiritual maturity is not measured by love alone — it is evidenced by discernment, which is what unlocks the deeper realms of love.
- When you operate in discernment, you no longer ask God "why" — because discernment shows you what God is doing and why He is doing it.
- Elders in the early church were not simply old men — they were people full of discernment.
"People think spiritual maturity is when you love. No. You can never know what love is until you enter into discernment. What you know is not really love. It's an example of love, but there are deeper realms of love you will never know until you work in discernment."
The Church's Defence Against Deception
- The way to protect the Body of Christ from deception is not to expose false teachers — it is to teach discernment.
- A believer who is truly engaged with God will recognise what has no God without a word being spoken.
- People fall for false miracles and counterfeit power because discernment is absent — not because discernment is inaccessible.
"The only way you keep the ship of God from being deceived is teach them discernment. If you teach people to engage with God, when they meet somebody that has no God, they will know — not because the person even opened their mouth."
Unskillfulness: The Condition of the Spiritual Baby
- Hebrews 5:13 declares that everyone who uses milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness — they are a babe.
- To be unskillful in the word of righteousness is to be spiritually stagnant, only knowing the entry point of salvation rather than the full depth of Scripture.
- You can be one hundred years old physically and two weeks old in the realm of the spirit.
"For everyone that uses milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. Many of you don't see miracles because you aren't skillful. You can't prophesy because you aren't skillful. You have zero discernment because you aren't skillful."
Strong Meat and the Full Age Believer
- Strong meat belongs to those who are of full age — those who have exercised their senses to discern both good and evil.
- The meat Paul speaks of is not natural food — it is the flesh of the living Jesus, the deep spiritual transformation that comes from true communion with Him.
- There is wisdom God will never speak to a believer who has not matured — spiritual perfection before God is the prerequisite for receiving it.
"Strong meat belongs to them that are of full age. Even to those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. There is certain wisdom God can never speak to you if you are not mature."
Discernment and Judging Authentic Ministry
- Calling a man of God fake without discernment is not spiritual — it is the most dangerous form of presumption.
- A single misstep in discernment has the capacity to destroy an entire nation or nullify a whole generation, as seen in the founding deception of Islam.
- A man of God still growing in one area is not a false prophet — the biblical standard is whether his prophecies come to pass, not whether he is perfect.
"A misstep of discernment can destroy a whole nation. One wrong step out of discernment can destroy a whole generation, can nullify a whole people that they are fighting until now for something they don't even know. One person failed to discern."
Religion, Spirituality, and the Liberation of Discernment
- Religion teaches laws and bondage; spirituality liberates because it brings you into discernment.
- Operating in discernment means knowing beyond knowing — without being able to explain what you know or how you know it.
- Carnality can never serve spirituality; a person who has no discernment remains a baby before God regardless of their external religious activity.
"Religion teaches you laws and bondage. Spirituality liberates you because you enter into discernment. Now you know beyond knowing, without knowing what you know, but you know beyond knowing."
Discernment and the Word of God
- The Bible is a manual for everything pertaining to life — but without discernment, it can bind rather than liberate.
- A skillful teacher of the Word can take believers into financial wisdom, marriage, self-discipline, investing, and the deeper things of the Spirit — all from Scripture.
- Christians who reject financial or practical teaching from the Word of God reveal that they are not yet skilled.
"The Bible is basic instruction before leaving earth. It's a manual for everything you need pertaining to life. But if you don't carry discernment, there are people who have read the Bible — instead of the Bible liberating them, they became more bound in the Lord."
Key Definitions
Discernment — The embedded spiritual ability to distinguish truth, direction, and the nature of things — not through investigation or opinion, but through the Spirit of God moving within a matured believer.
Skillful in the word of righteousness — Having mastery of the Word of God at a level that demonstrates spiritual maturity, enabling a believer to go deep into Scripture across every area of life rather than remaining at its entry point.
Strong meat — As defined by Hebrews 5:14 and 1 Corinthians 2, the flesh of the living Jesus — the deep truths of Scripture and the spiritual transformation that belongs exclusively to those who are of full age.
Milk — The first principles of the oracles of God — salvation, sin, and the basic tenets of the faith — appropriate for new believers but insufficient for the spiritually mature.
Full age / Mature — Not a reference to physical or chronological age or years in church, but to a believer who has exercised their spiritual senses to the point where God considers them perfect and speaks His deepest wisdom to them.
Unskillful — Spiritually stagnant in one place — knowing that the Word deals with righteousness but lacking the technique to go deeper, remaining confined to the entry-level message of salvation.
Key Takeaways
- Discernment is embedded, not deployed — Understanding this removes the passive approach to spiritual perception and calls every believer into the active cultivation of a matured spirit.
- The absence of discernment costs you everything — Wrong partners, dead-end decisions, and vulnerability to false ministry are not bad luck — they are the direct consequence of a life lived without exercised spiritual senses.
- Spiritual maturity is measured by exercised senses, not years — Age in church or Christian experience means nothing if your senses remain unexercised; God speaks His deepest wisdom only to those He considers spiritually mature.
- The Church's greatest weapon against deception is discernment, not exposure — Pointing out false teachers does not protect people; raising believers who are genuinely engaged with God does.
- The Word of God covers every area of life, but discernment is required to unlock it — Without discernment, the Bible can be read and still leave a person more bound than before.
Reflection Questions
- In what areas of your life — marriage, finances, ministry choices, friendships — have you made decisions without exercising spiritual discernment? What were the outcomes, and what do they reveal about where your spiritual senses currently are?
- Are you still living primarily on spiritual milk — returning repeatedly to the same entry-level truths about salvation and love — or are you actively pursuing the meat of God's Word? What specific step would move you toward maturity?
- When you encounter a minister or teacher, what standard do you use to evaluate them? Does that standard reflect discernment or opinion, investigation or spiritual perception?
- Have you ever dismissed a man of God because of one area of imperfection, while embracing another who presented well but was destructive? What does that pattern reveal about the state of your discernment?
- Is your life oriented around God's calendar and God's purposes, or are you unknowingly reacting to the calendar and agenda of the enemy? Where specifically do you need to reclaim spiritual ground?
Prayers and Declarations
Pray this aloud:
"Lord, I desire to walk in discernment. Cause my senses to begin to function. I desire to walk in discernment."
Closing Intercessory Prayer
"Father in the name of Jesus, I pray for everybody that is watching. I pray, Father, wherever they are. I pray Lord that they will enter into discernment. That Father, that we will be able to tell the difference between wrong and right, good and evil, that no matter how good something presents itself, they will be able to know beyond the knowing faculty of human nature, but they will know by the spirit, what is right for them, what is good for them. I pray Father, every veil will be removed from them. I pray all that veils will be removed from them, every demonic thing that has kept them from entering into discernment. Every weakness that has kept them from entering into discernment, I dismantle it in the name of Jesus. I pray that they will all enter and manifest discernment right now in the mighty name of Jesus, Father, in all decisions whatsoever they do. Let it be by the spirit of discernment. Lord, we thank you that you heard us. We bless your holy name in Jesus name Amen."
