Are the Dead Conscious? What the Bible Really Teaches About Life After Death

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 26 February 2025

The dead are not silent—they are acutely aware, and understanding this biblical reality will shatter the prison of religious ignorance.

Every culture on earth speaks about the dead because it is everyone's experience. Yet the Church remains deeply divided—some believe the dead are unconscious, others believe they watch over us, and many dismiss every encounter with the dead as demonic. The full counsel of God, however, reveals a far more detailed and sobering reality: the dead are conscious, memory is intact, and heaven and earth are not as disconnected as religion has taught.

Teaching Overview

  1. God never created anything for destruction
  2. What does the Bible mean by the dead?

Nothing Created for Destruction

  • God never created anything for destruction — not the spirit, not the soul, not the body, not the earth itself.
  • The resurrection exists because God never intended the body to be permanently destroyed — He will raise it again.
  • Even in the lake of fire, destruction was never God's original intent; a new heaven and a new earth are being prepared because what He created was always meant to endure.

"God never created anything for destruction. Nothing is ever truly lost."

What the Bible Means by "the Dead"

  • Ecclesiastes 9:5 — "the dead know nothing" — refers to physical consciousness only; the body has no self-awareness after death because its awareness came from the soul.
  • The Bible uses "the dead" in two distinct senses: the death of the body, and those confined in hell — Sheol, the land of the dead.
  • Those in hell are called "the dead" not because they are unconscious, but because they have no future — they have been eternally separated from God.

"The spirit goes back to God who gave it. So the only thing the dead have is their soul. And their soul is confined in a prison called hell."

The Consciousness of Those in Hell

  • Those in hell are absolutely, 100% conscious — aware of their torment, aware of those around them, and aware of the living they left behind.
  • Memory in hell is intensified — every moment of life is recalled, including every opportunity to choose Christ that was refused.
  • The worst torment in hell is not the fire or the demons — it is the mental anguish of knowing that God is present but permanently out of reach.

"Those who are in hell are actually more conscious."

"The understanding that I have chosen life without God — that is one of the worst torments in hell."

The Spirit of God vs. The Presence of God

  • There is a critical distinction between the Spirit of God and the presence of God that must be understood to rightly interpret spiritual experiences.
  • When the Spirit of God comes upon a person, it is a personal, internal experience — an entity dwelling within; those nearby do not receive it.
  • The presence of God is external — a manifestation of a being making Himself known in a location, which others in the vicinity can sense without personally receiving.

"When the Spirit of God comes upon you, it is a personal experience within. But a presence is an external experience of a being being in a place that is making himself known."

God's Omnipresence Extends Even Into Hell

  • Psalm 139 reveals that God's presence reaches everywhere — including hell — but those confined there cannot access Him.
  • Those in hell can experience the presence of God without it touching them, and that is part of the torment — aware of God, yet permanently separated.
  • God's omnipresence demonstrates total control: even the one running from Him is being led by His hand.

"In hell they can experience the presence and the spirit of God without it touching them — and that is the torment."

The Rich Man and Lazarus: Consciousness Confirmed

  • Luke 16:19–31 establishes that those in hell are conscious, possess memory, feel physical sensation, and are aware of both the blessed and the living.
  • Before Christ's ascension, hell and paradise occupied the same dimension — separated by the bottomless pit — so that those in hell could see those in paradise, compounding the torment.
  • The rich man's request — that Lazarus warn his five brothers — confirms that those in hell are aware of who they left behind and grieve over their eternal condition.

"Are the dead conscious of the living? Absolutely. Because they remember. They remember who they left behind."

Those in Heaven Can Appear to the Living

  • At the Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus and the disciples — not as demons or familiar spirits, but as themselves, conversing with the Lord.
  • When Jesus cried out on the cross, the shout broke open graves; the bodies of sleeping saints arose, went into the holy city, and appeared to many.
  • Scripture never states that such appearances ceased — a doctrine forbidding them cannot be built on a prohibition that was never written.

"Can those in heaven talk to those who are on earth? Yes. Let nobody lie to you. Yes, they can."

"It's right there in your Bible. And neither did it say it wouldn't happen again. It never said that."

Scripture Is the Foundation, Not the Ceiling

  • Not everything in the full counsel of God is written verbatim in Scripture — the Bible is the foundation of spiritual understanding, not its outer limit.
  • God never taught us how to prophesy in Scripture — yet He declared in Joel 2:28 that sons and daughters shall prophesy; the doing precedes the understanding.
  • As a believer matures spiritually, there are experiences and realities that enrich the reading of Scripture rather than contradict it.

"Scripture is our foundation, not our ceiling."

Religion Is a Prison; Discipleship Is Freedom

  • The inability to discern spiritual realities comes directly from having rejected those realities before ever encountering them.
  • The Church's instinct to label every encounter with the dead as demonic is a doctrinal error — it would make Jesus Himself guilty of consulting familiar spirits at the Transfiguration.
  • The call is to be a true disciple — teachable, sound in mind, and open to the full counsel of God as revealed by the Holy Spirit.

"Come out of the prison of religion. Religion is a prison."

"How can you discern what you have rejected? How is that possible?"

Key Definitions

Physical Consciousness — The self-awareness that belongs to the body during earthly life; when the body dies, this awareness ceases because it depended on the soul for its life source.

The Dead (Scriptural) — Used in two distinct senses in the Bible: (1) those whose physical bodies have died and lost physical consciousness, and (2) those confined in Sheol/hell, who are spiritually alive but have no future.

Sheol / Hades — The biblical name for the realm of the dead, specifically hell — a place of confinement and torment where souls are fully conscious but have no future and cannot cross into paradise.

Spirit of God — An entity that comes upon and dwells within a specific individual, producing an internal personal transformation; others nearby do not receive it.

Presence of God — The external manifestation of God or a divine being making Himself known in a location; perceived by those nearby as a felt awareness without necessarily entering them.

Dreaming a Dream — Not simply receiving dreams, but the cultivated spiritual capacity to enter into a God-given revelatory dream through intentional spiritual posture; what distinguishes a prophet from someone who merely experiences dreams.

Full Counsel of God — The complete revelation of God that encompasses Scripture as foundation plus the living experiences, encounters, and revelations He gives to His people — broader than the written text alone.

Key Takeaways

  • God never created anything for destruction — this foundational truth means nothing is truly lost, the resurrection is guaranteed, and even theft by the enemy is ultimately futile.
  • "The dead know nothing" refers to physical consciousness only, not the consciousness of the soul or spirit — misreading this verse has built an entire false doctrine that contradicts the clear testimony of Scripture.
  • Those in hell are fully conscious — aware, remembering, and without hope — this reality demands urgency in living for Christ and in interceding for the lost while they are still alive.
  • Scripture is the foundation, not the ceiling — spiritual maturity requires holding the written Word as essential while remaining open to the full counsel of God beyond what is verbatim in the text.
  • Those in heaven can appear to and communicate with the living — the Transfiguration and the resurrection appearances of the saints in Matthew 27 are Scripture's own testimony to this truth.

Reflection Questions

  1. If the dead are conscious — fully aware, remembering every opportunity they had to choose Christ — how does that change the urgency with which you live your faith and share it with others?
  2. Where have you allowed the "doctrines of devils" — religious assumptions taught as certainty — to cause you to reject something God was actually doing or showing you?
  3. Prophet Lovy teaches that Scripture is a foundation, not a ceiling. What spiritual experience or encounter have you dismissed because you could not find a verbatim scripture for it — and what would it mean to hold it with both discernment and openness?
  4. Knowing that the worst torment in hell is the mental anguish of having chosen a life without God, who in your life do you need to intercede for more seriously before the book is closed?
  5. Are you a disciple or are you religious? What would it practically look like this week to become more teachable — moving beyond what you are comfortable with into what the Holy Spirit is actually saying?

Prayers and Declarations

Opening Prayer

"My Father in Heaven, I thank You for Your mercy and Your grace through Your Son Jesus. Thank You for the opportunity to be creative again. It's been a long road, but I am grateful, Lord. Mold me, shape me, into the image of your Son, Jesus. Save me and rescue me from my weaknesses, that I may be a witness for your kingdom. Bless us all, Lord, as we partake of this. Glorify yourself now. Thank you Jesus."

Congregational instruction — "Lift your hands to God. Lift your hands to God. Both your hands to God, the whole family."

"Father help your son. Help him. Let this thing leave him, Father. Touch this family. Touch everyone involved in Jesus name. Jesus name. God bless you all in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord."

"Father, we thank you for this hour. You have been so kind to us. And Father, the goal of all these things is to know you and to know your son Jesus. Father, help us by your Holy Spirit to continue in a place of intimacy, to continue in a place of growing in the love that you have made available. Father, glorify yourself even now. We thank you that you are taking us higher for your own glory. Father, we thank you in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen."
