Breaking the Spirit of Famine: Discernment, the Living Word, and the Power of Obedience

Breaking the Spirit of Famine: Discernment, the Living Word, and the Power of Obedience

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 24 June 2023

Spiritual ignorance keeps believers praying amiss, running from their destiny, and starving in a famine they cannot name.

Life is primarily spiritual, and anyone not operating spiritually is missing what God has ordained. When believers cannot discern seasons from famines, facts from truth, or charity from covenant giving, they remain trapped — praying, moving, and giving in ways that produce no change. This teaching cuts through that ignorance and equips the spiritually hungry to recognize what they are in, what God requires, and how to break out.

Teaching Overview

  1. Spiritual ignorance is the root cause of praying amiss, vain worship, and missing the will of God.
  2. Famine is not a season — it is a spiritual disruption that only God can end, and the only way to survive it is to outlast it.
  3. A famine of the Word of God is currently occurring in the earth, producing spiritual blindness, pride, and powerlessness in the church.
  4. True change is not feeling spiritual — it is God actively engaging with you and life flowing from you to others.
  5. Giving is a conduit to God: seeds and sacrifices carry burdens before a sanctified altar, and obedience — not prayer alone — breaks certain curses.

When it worksWhen aligned with God's will and spoken in spiritAlways — obedience is the highest form of spiritual action
When it failsWhen prayed amiss, outside of God's will, or from a wrong heart

The Danger of Spiritual Ignorance

  • Spiritual things can only be discerned by the spiritual — children of God have God living in them, yet those operating in dark forces are often more spiritually aware.
  • Ignorance of the times and seasons causes prayer to be offered in vain — God does not respond to prayer that falls outside His will for the moment.
  • Spiritual ignorance is never a defense — the grace of God may cover you, but it does not excuse you from the consequences of praying amiss.

"If you are not spiritually aware, you will pray amiss. Hear me, you will pray amiss."

Praying According to God's Will

  • Jesus in Gethsemane petitioned according to His Father's will, not His own — He knew He was born to die and aligned His prayer accordingly.
  • True petition reveals your desire to God while remaining fully submitted to His will, because His will is best for you and for those you care for.
  • Discernment of God's will is the precondition for effective prayer — without it, even sincere prayer misses the mark.

"You pray because you are aware of the will of God, but you also reveal your desire to Him so that it can help you to still fulfill His will, because His will will be best for you and even for those that you care for."

True Discernment

  • Discernment of spirits means seeing the spirit content of a person, not the soul content — God does not select people according to their soul.
  • Assessing people by outward behavior and saying "I just feel they are not from God" is not discernment — it is cold reading and logic.
  • Anyone who discerns others but cannot discern their own spirit or the situations in their own life does not have discernment.

"True discernment is the ability to discern spirits, not the outward appearance of people."

Seasons and Famine

  • God has ordained four seasons upon the earth — summer, winter, fall, and spring — and each season supports the next.
  • Famine is not a season — it is a disruption of the order of things that causes life in a specific place to cease to exist.
  • Famine is the only spirit you have to outlast — you cannot fight it, and there is nothing you can do to stop it from coming.

"Famine is a disruption of things and there is nothing you can do to stop famine. Famine is the only spirit that you have to outlast, you cannot fight it."

The Famine of the Word of God

  • There is a famine of the Word of God occurring right now over all the earth — believers don't even know it is happening.
  • There is a difference between reading Scripture and receiving the Word of God — man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, not by every word he reads.
  • When there is a famine of the Word of God, the power of God becomes so rare that prophecy is mistaken for familiar spirits and genuine visions are attributed to demonic sources.

"If there is no word proceeding from God to you, you are experiencing a famine and eventually everything in your life will die."

Effects of Word Famine on the Church

  • When there is a famine of the Word, people enter into pride and begin to play God — becoming like the Pharisees, policing what God will and will not do.
  • Prayer life dies in a famine — people pray because they need something, not because they need God, and once they receive what they asked for, prayer ceases.
  • The famine of the word creates spiritual blindness and short-sightedness — the automatic response becomes reacting to the immediate rather than moving with how God is moving.

"Prayer will not be because they need God."

True Change and Spiritual Maturity

  • Feeling changed and being changed are two different things — true change is visible to others before it is announced by you.
  • True change is learning to engage with God, and the sign of maturity is when God begins to engage with you — confiding in you, guiding you, revealing things to you.
  • A mature believer gives life to others — if people cannot come and rest in the shadow of your tree, you are not interacting with God because you have no life-giving power.

"You know that you have matured when God begins to engage with you."

Speaking With Purpose and Wisdom

  • Just speaking your mind at every moment is the highest and most visible sign of spiritual immaturity — wisdom knows when to speak and when to be silent.
  • Every conversation must produce an element of building — if it only reflects how you feel, it destroys the relationship rather than strengthening it.
  • Anything that does not build should not come out of you — what comes out of you should give life, even in correction.

"Just speaking your mind at every moment is the highest and most visible sign of spiritual immaturity."

Facts vs. Truth

  • The fact is your current observable condition — the truth is God's eternal word over your life.
  • To pray and operate in truth is the spiritual way of life — facts will lead you to death, but truth will lead you to life.
  • You may be sick and the doctor's report may be the fact — but the truth is that by His stripes you are healed.

"The fact is your poor now, but the truth is your rich. If you follow facts, you will die. You follow truth, you will live."

Running From Famine

  • Jesus called believers the good ground — when famine comes over the land, it does not touch the physical ground but affects the spiritual atmosphere.
  • Changing locations does not mean you have come out of a famine — the sign of famine is that your productivity has been reduced, not just your comfort.
  • Running to a cheaper or easier location only extends the famine — because eventually you must return to the place of your destiny and continue from where you left off.

"Your physical change of location does not stop the drought."

Giving as a Conduit to God

  • Giving to the poor expresses the love of God toward others — but it has no capacity to increase you; it is evidence that you are a child of God, not an investment for personal growth.
  • Giving to God is a conduit — through it you can express love to God, and through it you can also make a request of God.
  • A gift to God must cost you — if it does not cost you, it is only thanksgiving, not a sacrifice.

"Giving is a conduit. You can express your love to God with giving. You can demand something from God with gift."

Seeds, Sacrifices, and Sanctified Vessels

  • A seed is a carrier of a curse — it must be buried because in its seed form it carries death, but it has the ability to be reborn.
  • Not every curse is broken by prayer — certain curses are broken only by prophetic acts.
  • When a seed or sacrifice is brought before a man or woman of God who has not been proven spiritually, they will not have the power to break what is operating in your life — and they may become a partaker of the curse themselves.

"A seed is a carrier of a curse. In its seed form, it is actually carrying death. Not every curse is broken by prayer. Certain curse is broken by prophetic acts."

Obedience Over Prayer

  • A sacrifice of obedience will set you free — no number of declarations in the name of Jesus will accomplish what an act of obedience can.
  • Jesus did not pray to break the curse over humanity — He had to die; the sacrifice of obedience was the only thing sufficient to break it.
  • When God is the one resisting you because of dishonoured authority, no prayer can overcome His resistance — the only resolution is repentance and reconciliation.

"Sometimes a sacrifice of obedience will set you free. Jesus had to die to break the curse, not pray."

Key Definitions

Spiritual Discernment — The ability to see the spirit content of a person or situation, not the soul content or outward appearance; it operates through the Spirit of God, not through cold reading or behavioral assessment.

Famine — Not a season but a disruption of the order of things that causes life in a specific place to cease to exist; it is a spiritual act that cannot be fought, only outlasted.

Famine of the Word of God — A condition in which there is no word proceeding from the mouth of God to the people — not a shortage of Bibles or sermons, but an absence of the living, spoken word of God that produces life.

Seed / Sacrifice — A gift that carries the burdens and curses of the one who brings it before God; it must cost the giver, must be presented through a sanctified vessel, and functions as a conduit between the believer and God.

Fornication (Hebrew meaning) — To prostitute yourself to other gods; in Scripture, the primary usage is about spiritual adultery — breaking covenant with God by pursuing other spiritual allegiances — not limited to physical sexual acts.

Facts vs. Truth — Facts are the current observable condition; truth is God's eternal word over a situation. To pray and live by facts leads to death; to pray and live by truth leads to life.

Key Takeaways

  • Spiritual ignorance causes believers to pray amiss — not knowing the will of God for a specific moment means your prayer can be sincere and still miss the mark entirely.
  • Famine is not a season and cannot be fought — it must be outlasted — running to a new location or binding it in prayer does not end a famine; only recognizing it and outlasting it by God's instruction does.
  • A famine of the Word of God is happening now — the church can be full, Bibles can be open, and prayer can be constant, while spiritual death is advancing because there is no living word proceeding from God to the people.
  • True change is measured by God's engagement with you, not your feelings — if God is not confiding in you, guiding you, and speaking to you, the evidence of transformation is absent regardless of how spiritual you feel.
  • Obedience and properly placed giving break what prayer alone cannot — certain curses require a prophetic act of obedience or a seed presented before a proven, sanctified vessel to be broken.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are you currently praying according to what you want from God, or according to what God wants for this specific moment in your life — and how would you even know the difference?
  2. When you examine the last season of your life, have you been outlasting a famine or running from it by changing locations, relationships, or environments — and what does that tell you about where your destiny actually is?
  3. What is the evidence in your life that God is actively engaging with you — not just that you feel more spiritual, but that He is confiding in you, guiding you, and that others are finding life by being around you?
  4. Is there a broken relationship with a person in authority — a parent, a leader, a covering — that no amount of prayer is overcoming, because the one resisting you may be God Himself until obedience is offered?
  5. When you give, does it cost you — and do you take time to examine your heart before giving, or do you give from habit, obligation, or emotion without considering whether your heart posture will cause your offering to be accepted?

Prayers and Declarations

"Father, I pray for everyone that is watching, no matter where there are, I pray that Lord you will visit them. You will help them. You will transform their lives based on them, understanding the principles that it takes to work with you. Lord, show your face unto them, direct them on the path of life, the path that will set them up where you always wanted them to be. God grace them to walk on high ground. Let the seasons that were broken not only be stored restored, but let the famine that has been over their lives, be removed by reason of the seed that they have presented before you. Direct them like you directed Isaac, not to go into Egypt, but to go to the place that you will reveal to him, do the same for them. That just because the going is hard where they are, it doesn't mean it's a call to abort everything that they have been working towards. Lord help them to understand where you want them to be in the name of your Son Jesus. Amen."
