The Presence of God Pt 1: Understanding the Most Powerful Mark of God in a Believer's Life
The Presence Of God · Part 1 of 3
The presence of God is not what you feel inside — it is what others experience when you walk into a room.
Faith and fear operate by the same mechanism: both are energized by information you choose to believe. But there is a deeper reality that supersedes every spiritual gift, every anointing, and every emotional experience of God — the presence of God Himself, manifesting externally in a tangible, undeniable way. This teaching lays the foundation for understanding what the presence of God truly is, why it is the primary mark of God in a believer's life, and why no believer can afford to live without it.
Teaching Overview
- The presence of God is fundamentally different from the Holy Spirit, the anointing, and spiritual gifts — it is God Himself manifesting externally.
- One can have the Holy Spirit, speak in tongues, and operate in gifts, yet still not carry the presence of God.
- The primary mark of God in a believer's life is the presence of God — not salvation, not the anointing, not spiritual experience.
- The anointing has limitations, but walking in the presence of God produces power, divine advertisement, and lasting transformation.
- Believers who do not walk in God's presence are left constantly defending themselves — but God's presence is a shield that requires no human maintenance.
Key Distinctions
| Spirit of God | Anointing | Salvation | Faith | Fear | Mark of God | Mark of the Beast | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | God's life placed within a person | A gift and material product the Spirit of God produces and gives | The life of God in a person | Belief in true information that empowers the spirit of God | Belief in false information that empowers the spirit of fear | The presence of God manifesting externally through a person | The primary external mark of the devil on a person |
| Source | God Himself | A product of God's Spirit — can exist independently of His presence | God | Knowledge of truth | Knowledge of falsehood or deception | God dwelling with and through a person | The devil |
| Can it be faked? | Cannot be faked | Can be fabricated independent of God | Cannot be faked | No — it is genuine belief, though in wrong or right things | No — it is genuine belief, though in wrong or right things | Never | Often counterfeited |
| Operates externally? | Internal — directs and sustains | Operates through gifts on others | Internal — sustains God's life in the person | Internal — changes how you function | Internal — changes how you function | Yes — people experience it without being told | Yes — marks and influences externally |
| Example in Scripture | Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness | Saul prophesied after God rejected him; devil's anointing | Receiving salvation through Christ | Elijah calling down fire | Continual self-protective declarations from fear | Moses: Egyptians said "the God of Moses is a true God" | Spoken of in Revelation as the enemy's counterfeit mark |
| Produces lasting change? | Directs toward the experience of God | Can solve a problem without producing lasting transformation | Gives eternal life | Positions you to act on God's truth | Positions you to act on the enemy's lies | Yes — people follow God for life | Allegiance to the enemy's system |
Faith and Fear: Two Sides of the Same Mechanism
- Faith and fear operate by the same principle — both are energized and sustained by what you choose to believe.
- Faith is empowered by truth until it overflows and becomes your reflex; fear is empowered by false information believed so deeply that it activates the spirit of fear.
- You function according to what you acknowledge and feed.
"Fear is a spirit also, that is said by false information, that you believe in it so much, that it empowers that spirit."
The Mark of God vs. The Mark of the Beast
- Most believers discuss the mark of the beast, but few understand that there is also a mark of God.
- The primary mark of God in a believer's life is the presence of God.
- Just as the mark of the beast identifies those under the devil's domain, the presence of God is the defining mark of those who belong to God.
"There is the Mark of God and there is the Mark of the Devil. The primary mark of God in a believer's life is the presence of God."
Salvation and the Holy Spirit Are Not the Same as God's Presence
- Salvation is the life of God in a person; the Holy Spirit is the sustainer of that life — but neither is the presence of God.
- One can have the Holy Spirit, speak in tongues, and give their life to Jesus, and yet not carry or manifest the presence of God.
- The Holy Spirit and salvation are extensions of God, but they are not the same as the presence of God.
"Salvation is the life of God in a person. The Holy Spirit is the sustainer of God's life in a person. But one can have the Holy Spirit and not have the presence of God."
What the Presence of God Actually Is
- The presence of God is not what you feel inside yourself — it is what people feel when you are in a place.
- The presence of God creates an encounter and an experience of who God is; it is the being of God made present in a tangible way.
- There is nothing wrong with experiencing God — the presence of God is the experience of God.
"The presence of God is what people feel when you are in a place. The presence of God is not what you feel inside of you."
You Can Never Fake the Presence of God
- A true prophet can discern whether prophetic information comes from angels, the Spirit of God, the spirit of man, or gathered information — because the source is always knowable.
- People can fake miracles, prophecies, and words of knowledge — but the presence of God cannot be counterfeited.
- The presence of God is the one spiritual reality that has no imitation.
"People can fake anything. People can fake everything. But you can never fake the presence of God."
The Anointing Is Not the Presence of God
- The anointing is a product the Spirit of God produces and gives — it can operate independently of God's presence, as demonstrated by Saul continuing to prophesy after God had rejected him.
- The devil himself was anointed as a result of being in God's presence — but when God's presence departed, that anointing became void and fabricated.
- What distinguished Moses from the magicians of Egypt was not superior anointing — it was the presence of God.
"Some of you mistake their anointing to be the presence of God and it's not. Because their anointing is a fabrication independent of God."
Elijah and the Confidence of Walking With God's Presence
- Elijah mocked the prophets of Baal because he carried the presence of God — his confidence was not presumption but the fruit of a life lived with God's presence.
- Elijah knew God as an ever-present reality he had experienced and walked with — not a feeling, but a Person.
- When Elijah said "maybe your God is on vacation," he was declaring: my God is here.
"God is an ever-present God but not everybody carries the presence of God."
The Spirit of God Versus the Presence of God
- "Greater is He that is in you" refers to the life of God within — but this does not automatically produce external power, protection, or manifestation.
- A believer can be poor, sick, and oppressed by demonic forces while having the Holy Spirit — because the Spirit within is not the same as the presence of God operating externally.
- Psalm 139:7 itself distinguishes between the Spirit and the presence: "Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?"
"The spirit of God and the presence of God are completely two different experiences."
Jesus: Led by the Spirit, but Leaving in the Power
- Jesus was led by the Spirit of God into the wilderness — the Spirit's role was to direct Him, not to manifest His presence.
- When Jesus left the wilderness, He left in the power of God — and His fame spread across the entire land before He had even preached His first message in a synagogue.
- The power Jesus operated in was not anointing-centered — it was God Himself manifesting through His presence.
"The power of God is a result of the presence of God."
God's Presence Advertises You
- The anointing can solve someone's problem and they will return to their old life — but the presence of God causes people to follow God for life.
- When the presence of God is upon a person, God begins to advertise them — they no longer have to promote themselves.
- This is why Jesus could call fishermen off a boat and they immediately abandoned everything to follow Him — not because of a sermon, but because of His presence.
"When the presence of God is in a place, God begins to advertise you. You no longer advertise yourself."
The Effect of God's Presence on People Around You
- Where the presence of God is, a holy fear and holy reverence enter the people — they tremble and know that God is in the place.
- The presence of God is not merely a spiritual atmosphere — it is an awe-producing encounter with God Himself.
- This is categorically different from sensing that God's Spirit is somewhere; it is encountering God as present.
"Where the presence of God is, there is a holy fear that enters people. There is a holy reverence that touches people."
Living Without God's Presence Leaves You Unprotected
- Believers who constantly declare "I cover myself, I protect myself, I guard against every demonic force" every day are revealing that they do not walk in the presence of God.
- The need for constant self-protective declarations is a symptom of the absence of God's presence, not a sign of spiritual maturity.
- The presence of God is itself the believer's covering — it is God acting independent of human effort.
"The reason why so many people always have to pray, I cover myself, I protect myself, I guard against every demonic force, every day 24-7, is because there's no presence of God."
Key Definitions
Presence of God — Not what you feel inside, but the external manifestation of God Himself in a place — a tangible reality that people encounter and cannot be faked.
Spirit of God — God's life placed within a person to direct and sustain them; an extension of God, but distinct from the presence of God.
Anointing — A product and material gift the Spirit of God produces and gives to a person; it can operate independently of God's presence and is subject to fabrication.
Salvation — The life of God placed within a person through faith in Jesus Christ; distinct from the presence of God manifesting externally.
Faith — Belief in true information, fed and sustained until it overflows and becomes the believer's reflexive response.
Fear — A spirit energized by false information believed so deeply that it empowers and directs the person, operating by the same mechanism as faith.
Key Takeaways
- The presence of God is the primary mark of God in a believer's life — not spiritual gifts, not tongues, not salvation alone; the presence of God is what distinguishes a believer as truly marked by God.
- One can have the Holy Spirit and not carry the presence of God — understanding this distinction is essential to understanding why many believers have God within them yet see little external transformation or power.
- The anointing operates independently of God's presence and has limitations — believers who build only on anointing will find it can be imitated, but the presence of God can never be faked or counterfeited.
- God's presence produces divine advertisement — when a believer walks in God's presence, God promotes them; those who self-promote reveal the absence of His presence.
- Constant self-protective declarations signal a lack of God's presence — the believer who walks in God's presence does not live in a posture of perpetual spiritual defensiveness, because the presence itself is the covering.
Reflection Questions
- Have you been seeking the gifts and anointing of God without deliberately pursuing His presence? What would it look like to reorient your spiritual life around the presence of God rather than spiritual experiences or gifts?
- Do you find yourself constantly declaring spiritual protection over yourself — "I cover myself, I bind this, I guard against that" — as a daily necessity? What does this teaching say about the root of that pattern in your life?
- When people encounter you, do they encounter the presence of God — or only your personality, your gifts, or your knowledge? What would need to change for your life to carry God's presence externally?
- Elijah's confidence in God came from walking with His presence, not from feelings or past experiences. Where are you drawing your spiritual confidence from — and is it the presence of God or something else?
- The anointing can solve a problem without producing lasting transformation, but the presence of God causes people to follow God for life. Who or what in your life has had that kind of lasting, life-changing effect — and was it the presence of God at work?
