The Reason You Can't Leave Yet: Divine Appointments, the Wilderness Season, and the Hand of God Upon Your Life

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 24 November 2025

The wilderness is not a detour from your destiny — it is the path to it.

There is a difference between God blessing you and God's hand being upon you. Most believers cannot tell the two apart — and that confusion costs them their divine appointment. This teaching cuts to the heart of why some seasons feel like suffering, why some doors look like God but aren't, and why the wilderness you are in right now is the very place God is doing His greatest work in you.

Teaching Overview

  1. Believers must distinguish between opportunities and divine appointments — one can be missed and recovered, the other, if missed, never returns.
  2. The wilderness season is not a sign of God's absence but the first and necessary stop on the path to a divine appointment.
  3. God's hand upon your life is evidenced not by material blessing or comfort, but by internal transformation and the shepherd's sustaining presence through adversity.
  4. Temptation in the biblical sense is designed to alter your destiny, not merely to trigger the battle of the flesh — recognizing the difference is critical to surviving your appointed season.
  5. Accepting the process is the only way to be positioned — God cannot position what keeps rejecting the wilderness.

The Difference Between a Blessing and God's Hand Upon You

  • A blessing is not evidence that God's hand is upon you — God makes rain fall on the good and the wicked alike.
  • Material wealth, health, and open doors are general expressions of divine goodness, not unique markers of divine appointment.
  • The sign of God's hand upon you is that everything is working for your good — including and especially the suffering.

"If the world can have what you have, then it is not special. I want you to start thinking like that. If the world can have what I have, then it's not necessarily from God."

Opportunities vs. Divine Appointments

  • Opportunities always appear as a moment your life can change; a divine appointment is the change that will actually alter everything about your life.
  • God never instructed His children to seek opportunities — He calls them to be prepared for divine appointments.
  • A missed opportunity returns; a missed divine appointment never does — it is generational, passing from you to your children's children.

"An opportunity you missed today, you'll get another opportunity tomorrow. But a divine appointment, if you can miss it, it will never return again."

"A divine appointment is generational. There will be pastimes from you to your children, to your children's children, to your children's children's children because it is an appointment with God."

The Wilderness as the Path to Divine Appointment

  • When God is leading you to your divine appointment, the first stop is always the wilderness — the path, not a detour.
  • Jesus Himself was led immediately into the wilderness by the Spirit after the Father's affirmation at the Jordan — the wilderness followed the blessing, not the sin.
  • The wilderness is the devil's domain — dry, unfruitful places where demons dwell — and God takes you there deliberately so you learn to confront the enemy before you reach your destiny.

"If you don't confront the devil in the wilderness, you will not be able to fight him in your destiny. If you don't overcome in the wilderness, you will not overcome in your destiny."

The Devil's Strategy Against Divine Appointments

  • The devil does not attack when everything is smooth — he comes after you when you begin marching toward your divine appointment.
  • He fishes believers out of their divine appointments during suffering, baiting them with what appears to be God's provision but requires answering to people rather than to God.
  • The moment you find yourself unable to speak of Jesus, unable to act according to your convictions without losing what was given to you, you are outside your divine appointment.

"What the devil hands you as if it is God's act. The first thing is you find yourself answerable to people. If you want to know you are outside your divine appointment, you can't talk about Jesus because the moment you talk about Jesus you lose your job."

Temptation vs. the Battle of the Flesh

  • The battle of the flesh — Paul's struggle in Romans 7 — is not temptation; it is the common conflict between carnality and spirituality, a call to yield more fully to God.
  • Temptation, in its biblical depth, is a strategic assault on your destiny — it manipulates your entire view of God's workings so that you abandon your divine appointment.
  • Temptation always comes when your need is highest, because that is when the enemy knows it is easiest to make you sell your birthright.

"Temptation alters you, so that you can miss your divine appointment. It manipulates you to change your whole view, on the workings of God, on the operations of God, so that you can give up your destiny."

Accepting the Process — The Condition of Positioning

  • God cannot position you if you keep rejecting the process — acceptance of the wilderness is the prerequisite for divine positioning.
  • Those who are truly in the process do not see suffering as a disadvantage; they see it as an advantage and carry it without complaint.
  • The wilderness is where God instructs you — giving you direction, revealing His will, and speaking His purpose into you through His Word.

"Stop rejecting the process. The suffering now has a purpose to refine you. It is no longer working for your destruction, it is working for your good."

"God cannot position you if you keep rejecting the process. If you're rejecting the process, there is no position. But if you accept the process, now there is positioning."

The Shepherd's Presence in the Valley

  • David's path through the valley of the shadow of death was not self-led — the shepherd was walking through that place with him.
  • God's comfort in the wilderness is subliminal unless you have eyes to see — what people call toughness or inner strength is actually a shepherd sustaining them.
  • The fact that you still have your mind, your hope, and your will to go on is not personal resilience — it is evidence the shepherd is with you.

"Your ability to have your mind is a sign the shepherd's with you. Some people call it toughness, no, you're not tough. Some people call it inner strength, no, you're not strong. Somebody is holding you. Somebody is sustaining you."

Key Definitions

Divine Appointment — The specific, God-ordained change that alters everything about your life; set before the foundation of the earth, generational in impact, and never returning if missed.

Opportunity — A moment that appears to shift your life for a season; decided upon by you, able to be recovered if missed, but requiring ongoing compromise to maintain when given by the enemy.

The Wilderness — The first and necessary stop on the path to your divine appointment; a dry place where God instructs, refines, and prepares you to confront the enemy before you enter your destiny.

Temptation — A strategic, destiny-targeted assault from the devil, designed to manipulate your entire view of God's workings so that you give up your divine appointment; distinct from the common battle of the flesh.

God's Hand Upon You — Not material blessing or health, but the specific divine attention that causes everything — including suffering — to work for your good, and that sustains and positions you for a generational purpose.

Refinement Through Suffering — The purposeful work of God in the wilderness season that sharpens, positions, and prepares a believer; not punishment, but the process by which God brings the best out of you.

Key Takeaways

  • Distinguish between an opportunity and a divine appointment — Chasing opportunities when God is calling you to a divine appointment can cause you to miss something that will never return.
  • The wilderness is the path, not the problem — Resisting or trying to escape the wilderness season means resisting the very process God is using to prepare and position you.
  • God's hand upon your life is proven through transformation, not comfort — Measuring God's favour by material goods blinds you to what He is actually doing in the season you are in.
  • Temptation targets your destiny, not just your morality — Understanding the true nature of temptation keeps you alert to the enemy's most dangerous strategy — making you abandon your divine appointment.
  • The shepherd is with you in the valley — The sustaining peace, the unbroken mind, the quiet voice saying everything will be okay is not your strength — it is the shepherd's presence, and recognizing it changes everything.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are you currently in a wilderness season? Have you been treating it as a problem to escape or as a path to embrace — and what would change if you genuinely accepted it as a divine appointment in progress?
  2. Look honestly at what you are currently pursuing or holding on to — is it an opportunity that requires you to compromise, or is it something God clearly led you into? What is it costing you spiritually to maintain it?
  3. Where in your life have you confused the battle of the flesh with a temptation targeting your destiny? How has that confusion shaped the decisions you've made in this season?
  4. The teaching says God cannot position you if you keep rejecting the process. What specific part of the process are you resisting right now — and what is driving that resistance?
  5. In what area of your life have you been calling it your own strength or resilience — when in truth it has been the shepherd holding you? How does recognising His presence change how you carry this season?

Prayers and Declarations

Opening Prayer

"Father, we thank you for this morning glory fire of our monsters, reveal yourself in a mighty way all Lord. Deliver us Father, show us your grace in your mercy, restore our souls today in your presence. We pray that there will be changes that will be tangible in our lives all Lord. Open our eyes to see today Father and glorify yourself. Thank you for purifying us. Thank you for cleansing us. Thank you for mercy In the mighty name of Jesus."

Lift your right hand to heaven. Say:

"Father, open my eyes."

"Father, open my eyes. To recognize, to recognize, your hand is upon me. Your hand is upon me."

Lift your voice and begin to pray. Lift your hands and pray. Ask the Lord sincerely:

"Father, may your hand be upon me. I receive everything that you have for me, God. May I never move? May never move without you, Your Lord, and the mighty name of Jesus, to God. I need Your hand upon my life, God. You are what I need. There's nothing more than I need than a blessing. The blessing which is Jesus Christ, may your hand forever be with me, Your Lord. May your hand never leave me."

Your spirit is what dwells within me. It is your spirit that gives me power. Thank you the palm of your hand — nothing can pluck me out there, God."

"I'm here to prophesy to somebody. You are about to enter into your divine appointment."

"I prophesy to you that your shepherd is with you in the fire, that your shepherd is with you in the drought, that your shepherd's with you in the battle. That is why you did not die when everybody else could have died. That is why you did not lose hope when everybody else would lose hope. That is why you did not lose your mind when everybody else could have lost their mind — there was a shepherd."

"My prayer for you is that your eyes will be opened. My prayer for you is that the heart of your heart will be opened, that you will see and know that God has the best for you and the wilderness is just one of the stops to your destiny."

Scripture References

  • Luke 4:5–8 — "And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." (KJV)
  • Matthew 3:16–17 — "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." (KJV)
  • Matthew 4:1 — "Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil." (KJV)
  • Matthew 4:4 — "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." (KJV)
  • Romans 7:15–25 — "For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin." (KJV)
  • Psalm 23:1–4 — "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." (KJV)
  • 1 Corinthians 15:50–52 — "Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." (KJV)
