The Spiritual Mind: Rising Above Instinct and Emotion to Walk in Life and Peace
Spiritual Mind · Part 1 of 2
The mind governed by the Spirit is the only mind that can truly access God — and it begins with understanding which mind you are operating from.
The human being is a tripartite creature — spirit, soul, and body — and each part possesses its own way of thinking. The spiritual mind is the gateway to life and peace in Christ, but most believers never ascend to it because they remain governed by physical instinct or soulish emotion. Scripture makes clear that to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Teaching Overview
- The human being operates from one of three minds: the physical mind, the soulish mind, or the spiritual mind — and only the spiritual mind aligns with God.
- The carnal mind is enmity against God and cannot be subject to His law, making spiritual renewal not optional but essential.
- Biblical figures such as Rahab and Simeon demonstrate what it looks like to operate from spiritual discernment rather than natural or soulish reasoning.
- The spirit must be elevated above both physical instinct and soulish desire for a believer to walk in the life and peace that God intends.
Key Distinctions
| Physical Mind | Soulish Mind | Spiritual Mind | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Instinct-driven thinking rooted in the body and its appetites | Thinking governed by emotion, will, and intellect — the seat of the soul | Thinking aligned with and governed by the Holy Spirit |
| Source | The flesh and its natural desires | The soul — comprising mind, will, and emotions | The renewed human spirit in union with God's Spirit |
| What it produces | Carnal behaviour, survival instinct, fleshly reaction | Religious zeal, emotional responses, moral reasoning without revelation | Life and peace — the fruit of alignment with God |
| Its relationship to God | Enmity against God — cannot please Him | Can acknowledge God but still miss His will without spiritual discernment | In harmony with God — able to receive, know, and obey His voice |
| Biblical example | The natural man who cannot receive the things of the Spirit | Those who follow religious tradition or emotional fervour without revelation | Rahab, who discerned God's hand; Simeon, who recognised the Messiah |
| What happens if it dominates | Death — spiritual separation and fruitlessness | A form of godliness without the power of true spiritual perception | Life and peace — the believer walks in the fullness of Christ |
The Three Minds: Physical, Soulish, and Spiritual
- The human being is composed of spirit, soul, and body — and each of these dimensions carries its own way of processing reality.
- The physical mind operates from instinct — it is the mind of the body, driven by appetite, sensation, and survival.
- The soulish mind operates from emotion, will, and intellect — it is capable of religious activity and moral reasoning, but it is not the same as spiritual discernment.
The Carnal Mind and Its Enmity Against God
- Romans 8:6 establishes the foundational contrast: to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
- The carnal mind is not merely weak or misguided — it is actively hostile to God and structurally incapable of submitting to His law.
- Walking in the Spirit is the only means by which the believer does not fulfil the lust of the flesh — the two are in direct opposition.
"To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."
The Fall and the Corruption of the Spiritual Mind
- Before the fall, Adam and Eve walked in unbroken communion with God — their spirits were alive and their perception of reality was governed by spiritual truth.
- The moment they ate of the forbidden tree, the spiritual faculty was corrupted — they descended from spiritual perception into soulish and physical consciousness.
- The serpent's strategy was precisely to redirect Eve's attention from God's Word to her own reasoning and sensory experience.
Rahab: Spiritual Discernment Over Natural Reasoning
- Rahab was not an Israelite — she had no covenant heritage — yet she discerned what the rest of Jericho could not: that the God of Israel was the true God and that His purposes could not be stopped.
- Her response was not driven by fear alone or survival instinct — it was an act of spiritual recognition that preceded any natural evidence of Israel's victory.
- Rahab's scarlet cord became the sign of her deliverance because she acted on spiritual discernment rather than natural reasoning, and she is numbered among the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11.
"Rahab perceived what her whole city could not — not because she had more information, but because she was operating from a different faculty."
Simeon: The Spiritual Mind Recognises What the Natural Eye Cannot See
- Simeon was a man on whom the Holy Spirit rested, and the Spirit had revealed to him that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
- When Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus into the temple, Simeon did not recognise the Messiah through physical or religious credentials — he recognised Him through the Spirit.
- Every other person in the temple that day saw a poor family presenting a child — Simeon saw the salvation of God, the light to the Gentiles, and the glory of Israel.
"Simeon did not use his eyes. He used his spirit. That is why he saw what no one else in that building saw."
Renewing the Spirit and Ascending to Spiritual Perception
- The spirit of the believer must be renewed and elevated — not merely the mind in an intellectual sense, but the deepest inner faculty that communes with God.
- Paul's instruction to walk in the Spirit is not a passive posture — it is an active, intentional orientation of the inner life toward God's Spirit.
- The believer who cultivates the spiritual mind begins to perceive, discern, and respond to reality the way God does — from truth rather than from circumstance.
Key Definitions
Physical mind — The mode of thinking driven by the body's instincts, appetites, and sensory experience; the lowest faculty of human consciousness, governing survival and fleshly desire.
Soulish mind — Thinking governed by the soul — comprising emotion, will, and intellect — capable of religious engagement and moral reasoning but distinct from and inferior to spiritual discernment.
Spiritual mind — The faculty of the renewed human spirit in union with the Holy Spirit; the mind that perceives spiritual reality and aligns with God's will, producing life and peace.
Carnal mind — As used in Romans 8, the orientation of the inner life toward the flesh; Paul defines its outcome as death and its posture toward God as enmity — it cannot be subject to the law of God.
Spiritual discernment — The capacity of the spiritual mind to perceive what natural and soulish reasoning cannot — including God's purposes, His voice, and the movement of His Spirit in a situation.
Walking in the Spirit — The active, intentional posture of orienting the inner life toward God's Spirit rather than toward fleshly desire or soulish impulse, described in Galatians 5 as the means by which the believer does not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Key Takeaways
- Human beings possess three distinct modes of thinking — and God can only be accessed through the spiritual mind — operating from physical instinct or soulish emotion, no matter how sincere, will never produce genuine communion with God.
- The carnal mind is not neutral — it is at war with God — understanding this removes any illusion that natural reasoning or emotional religion can substitute for spiritual renewal.
- Spiritual discernment operates independently of natural credentials or covenant heritage — Rahab and Simeon demonstrate that it is not background, tradition, or religious position that grants access to God's perception, but the cultivation of the spiritual faculty.
- The spirit must be intentionally elevated above instinct and emotion — spiritual maturity is not automatic; it requires the believer to actively choose the governance of the Spirit over the pulls of the flesh and soul.
Reflection Questions
- Which of the three minds — physical, soulish, or spiritual — most accurately describes how you have been processing your current circumstances, and what would it look like to respond from the spiritual mind instead?
- Like Rahab, have you ever perceived something about God's purposes that went against the evidence available to everyone around you — and did you act on it or suppress it?
- Simeon recognised the Messiah not through religious credentials but through the Spirit. Are there areas of your spiritual life where you are relying on religious familiarity rather than genuine spiritual discernment?
- What specific habits, thought patterns, or environments are currently feeding your physical or soulish mind more than your spirit — and what would you need to change to reverse that?
- If to be spiritually minded is life and peace, what is the quality of your inner life telling you about which mind currently governs you?
