Unusual Miracles: Why God Manifests Differently to Every Believer

Unusual Miracles: Why God Manifests Differently to Every Believer

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · Read on Medium · 18 April 2023

Doctrine must be built on Scripture alone — not on the limits of your personal encounter with God.

God does not manifest the same way to every person, and the danger of building theology from personal experience is that it imposes one person's encounter as a universal standard for everyone else. Scripture — not feeling, not sensation, not individual encounter — is the only legitimate foundation for Christian doctrine. Understanding God's ways, not merely being acquainted with Him, is what produces genuine spiritual maturity.

Teaching Overview

  1. Doctrine must be built on Scripture alone — not on personal experience, feeling, or encounter.
  2. God manifests differently to every believer according to their spiritual capacity and calling.
  3. Believers must understand God's ways, not merely be acquainted with Him through isolated encounters.
  4. Spiritual capacity varies among believers, and no one's capacity should be imposed as the universal standard.
  5. The Holy Spirit cannot express Himself through a believer beyond that believer's current capacity.

Doctrine Cannot Be Built on Experience

  • Doctrine built on personal experience or feeling, rather than Scripture, becomes a false standard imposed on others.
  • A believer who has never fallen under the power of the Holy Spirit has no scriptural basis for declaring that manifestation evil or unbiblical.
  • God manifesting differently to one person does not make that person's experience the theological norm for everyone else.

"You never build a doctrine of what you think. You don't build a doctrine of what you feel. Our doctrine must be based on Scripture. And our experience must never be exclusive because God manifests to everybody differently."

The Varied Manifestations of the Holy Spirit Are Biblical

  • In Acts chapter 2, when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles, the witnesses said they were drunk — and drunk people fall, they cannot contain themselves, they stirred up an entire city.
  • When the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus, there was no dramatic physical display — only a declaration: "This is my beloved Son."
  • When the Holy Spirit came upon Samson in his mother's womb, he did not leap as John the Baptist did.

"There are also people like the Lord Jesus. When the Holy Spirit came upon him, nothing happened. There was just a declaration — this is my beloved Son."

Spiritual Capacity Differs Between Believers

  • Paul declared he could eat anything offered to idols and it would not defile him — because of what he knew — while others would be defiled by the same action.
  • Spiritual capacity is shaped by calling, faith, knowledge, and the depth of one's walk with God.
  • Shallow believers demand that their experience become everyone's experience — this is not how God operates.

"Our spiritual capacity is different. We all don't possess the same spiritual capacity."

The Holy Spirit Is Limited by the Capacity of the Vessel

  • Every believer possesses the same Holy Spirit — there is no believer who has more of God than another in terms of Person.
  • However, the expression of the Holy Spirit through a believer is always limited to that believer's capacity.
  • This is why Scripture commands believers to study and show themselves approved — growth in capacity expands the expression of God through them.

"When the Holy Spirit is in you, he cannot express himself beyond your capacity. This is something people don't understand. This is why the Bible encourages you to study and show yourself approved. Whatever God does through you will always be limited to your capacity."

Key Definitions

Doctrine — A theological conviction governing belief and practice; must be drawn exclusively from Scripture, never from personal experience or feeling.

Knowledge (of God) — Acquaintance with God; a person can be acquainted with God and still not understand His ways.

Understanding (of God) — Comprehension of how and why God operates; this goes beyond acquaintance and requires study, growth, and sustained walking with God.

Encounter — A personal experience of God's presence or power; valid and real, but sovereign and varied — it cannot be made into a universal doctrinal standard.

Spiritual Capacity — The measure of a believer's ability to carry and express the Holy Spirit, shaped by calling, faith, knowledge, and depth of walk with God; it differs between believers and can grow.

Manifestation — The outward expression of the Holy Spirit through or upon a believer; always calibrated to the individual's calling and capacity, and therefore not uniform across all believers.

Key Takeaways

  • Doctrine must be grounded in Scripture alone — a teaching built on what one person felt or experienced is not a foundation for universal Christian belief.
  • God's manifestations are sovereign and varied — the Holy Spirit fell differently on Jesus, the Apostles, Samson, and John the Baptist; no single expression is the exclusive pattern.
  • Spiritual capacity determines spiritual expression — what God is able to do through a believer is always proportional to that believer's capacity, which makes study and growth non-negotiable.
  • Imposing personal experience as universal truth is spiritual shallowness — believers who demand their encounter become the standard for all others are not operating in mature understanding.
  • Understanding God is greater than merely encountering Him — encounter introduces you to God; understanding His ways is what matures and sustains your walk with Him.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you ever judged another believer's experience of God — such as falling under the power, speaking in tongues, or showing no outward response — based on your own encounter rather than on Scripture? What did this teaching reveal about that judgment?
  2. What areas of your theology have been shaped more by personal experience or church culture than by careful study of Scripture? What would it take to re-examine those foundations?
  3. If the Holy Spirit cannot express Himself through you beyond your current capacity, what practical steps are you taking to grow that capacity through study, prayer, and obedience?
  4. Where have you mistaken acquaintance with God for understanding of His ways — and what would it look like to move from one to the other in your current season?
  5. Which truth in this teaching challenged you most, and what is one concrete action you can take this week in response to it?

"Father thank you for this family. Use this family to be a family that will bring people to your glory. Bless them and increase them for the sake of this child. May every plan of the enemy concerning them fail. Father secure them today. May your angels walk with them and be with them. The Lord this child will grow to serve you and to bring many to your kingdom. In the mighty name of Jesus."
