Developing The Soul · Part 1 of 3

Part 2
Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 29 December 2019

The soul is not automatic — it must be deliberately developed through right information, character formation, and spiritual discipline.

The soul is the most misunderstood and most neglected dimension of the human being. It is not the spirit, and it is not the body — it is the critical intermediary that connects them, and it is the battlefield where the enemy wages war, where character is formed, and where spiritual power is either expressed or suppressed. Developing the soul is not a prayer request — it is a lifelong, 24-hour process that requires the right information at the right time, the right trials endured with the right understanding, and the right spiritual posture toward God.

Teaching Overview

  1. The soul is a distinct entity — neither spirit nor body — that must be deliberately developed through knowledge, trials, and spiritual discipline, not through prayer alone.
  2. The order of spirit, soul, and body determines whether a person functions as fallen, regenerated, or spiritually mature.
  3. Right information at the right time is the engine of soul development — wrong or premature information destroys rather than builds.
  4. Character is formed in the soul, and character is what protects and sustains spiritual vision and power.
  5. The spirit is already perfect at new birth; it is the soul that requires ongoing development so the spirit can be properly expressed through it.

The Soul as a Chemical Reaction of Spirit and Body

  • Man did not become a living spirit at creation — man became a living soul, the product of God's Spirit being breathed into a body formed from dust.
  • The soul is the connecting substance between the spirit and the flesh — it is what joins them together.
  • God's act of joining spirit and body was intentional, and the soul emerged from that union as a distinct entity with its own nature, needs, and developmental requirements.

"The soul is basically a side effect of the spirit connecting to the body. It was a chemical reaction — intentional by God, but it was a chemical reaction if I should say."

Why Adam and Eve Were Not Perfect

  • Adam and Eve had grown adult bodies but infant souls — they were like children who did not yet know the difference between good and evil.
  • The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was not evil in itself — when they ate of it, God declared that man had become like one of Them, knowing good and evil.
  • The problem was not the knowledge — it was that their souls were not yet developed enough to contain or control that information, so it corrupted them rather than building them.

"The information you are trying to acquire is more than what you are. You have not developed your soul to contain some of these things."

Right Information at the Right Time

  • Information at the wrong time — even correct information — will destroy rather than build because an undeveloped soul cannot contain what it receives.
  • Faith comes by hearing, and knowledge is the substance of spiritual power — the primary reason God's people perish is lack of knowledge, not lack of prayer.
  • This is why certain truths are sealed and hidden even within Scripture — not all revelation is given to all people at all times, because the soul must first be developed to hold it.

"What makes you spiritually powerful is not prayers — it is information."

The Hierarchy of Spirit, Soul, and Body

  • The spirit does not grow — it already is; it was made complete when God created all things and is older than the individual's earthly existence.
  • The soul is the servant of the spirit, and the body is the servant of the soul — when the soul is undeveloped, the spirit cannot be expressed through it regardless of how mature the spirit is.
  • Missing the voice of God is not primarily a spiritual problem — it is a soul problem, because the soul has not been developed to understand the language of the spirit.

"The problem is not that your spirit is immature. It is your soul that needs to grow in order to be a good servant to express the spirit."

Soul Development is a 24-Hour Process

  • Developing the soul is not a moment of prayer or an event — it is the continuous daily work of every believer.
  • The soul lives in two realms simultaneously — the physical and the spiritual — and whatever captures the most of its attention is what it will develop toward.
  • Because the soul can forget the benefits of God, it must be deliberately and consistently reminded and fed.

"Developing your soul is a 24-hour chore of a believer."

Trials and Troubles as Soul Development

  • Troubles, tribulations, losses, and struggles are not signs of God's absence — they are the instruments by which the soul acquires capacity and matures.
  • Character — which resides in the soul — is shaped through suffering, not through comfort; this is why Paul commands counting all trials as complete joy.
  • The contrast of Joseph and Samson illustrates the principle: Samson had power without character and lost his vision; Joseph had character and his character both gave him power and preserved his vision.

"You go through this thing so that the character, number one, can be shaped — because the character is in the soul, because it is in your soul that your will, your emotions are located."

Righteousness Versus Holiness

  • Righteousness is received — it is imputed through faith in Jesus Christ and requires no human effort or conduct.
  • Holiness is not the absence of sin — holiness means being whole, complete, and undivided within oneself; it describes a person whose spirit, soul, and body are in full agreement.
  • God is the same yesterday, today, and forever because His character is intact — there is no internal conflict, no dichotomy within Him; this is what it means for God to be holy.

"Holiness doesn't mean He's not sinning — that's not what it means. It means He's one with Himself. Everything in Him agrees together."

The Blood of Jesus and the Spirit of God

  • The blood of Jesus has never lost its power — its value and efficacy are absolute and unchanging.
  • However, the blood of Jesus does not give strength — it justifies; it was the sacrifice that removed the wrath of God.
  • Strength comes from the Spirit of God alone — it was the Spirit that came upon Samson, and Jesus declared He cast out demons by the Spirit of God.

"The blood of Jesus doesn't give you strength. Strength is given by the Spirit. It is the Spirit that is the strength of God."

Soulish Living Versus Spiritual Living

  • To be spiritual is not defined by volume of prayer or tongues — it is the capacity of the soul to focus on and yield to the spirit.
  • Many believers are more soulish than spiritual because their daily lives consume the attention of their soul, pulling it toward the physical realm rather than the spiritual.
  • Spiritual power is not the result of spiritual activity alone — it requires a developed soul that can serve as a vessel through which the spirit expresses itself.

"To be spiritual is the ability to make your soul focus on the Spirit. When we say you are not spiritual, we are saying your soul is not developed."

Key Definitions

Soul — The intermediary entity that emerges when God's Spirit enters a physical body; it connects the spirit to the flesh, and is the seat of the will, emotions, and character.

Soul Development — The deliberate, ongoing process of maturing the soul through right information, trials, character formation, and spiritual discipline so that it can properly express the spirit.

Holiness — Not the absence of sin, but wholeness and internal unity — being one with oneself, with no conflict between spirit, soul, and body; as Prophet Lovy states: "He's one with Himself. Everything in Him agrees together."

Righteousness — The standing before God that is received once, through faith in Jesus Christ; it requires no human effort or conduct to maintain — "I don't need to do anything to be righteous. I just need to receive Jesus."

Soulish — The condition of a believer whose soul is dominated by the physical realm and the daily life rather than oriented toward the spirit; a state of spiritual immaturity regardless of outward religious activity.

Born Again — The one-time event that redeems the spirit — producing a completely new spirit that never previously existed; distinct from the ongoing process of soul development and the bodily redemption that comes only through the cross.

Key Takeaways

  • The soul is the primary battleground of the Christian life — the enemy cannot touch the born-again spirit, so the attack always targets the soul, where will, emotion, and character reside.
  • Right information at the right developmental stage is what builds spiritual power — prayer without knowledge produces religious noise, not spiritual authority.
  • Three distinct remedies exist for three distinct parts of man — being born again redeems the spirit once; the cross redeems the body; but the soul requires a complex, ongoing process of development that cannot be shortcut.
  • Character formed in the soul is what protects and sustains spiritual vision — power without character destroys the one who carries it, as Samson's life demonstrates.
  • The blood of Jesus justifies; the Spirit of God empowers — conflating these two distinct functions produces a theology that leaves believers spiritually powerless despite genuine devotion.

Reflection Questions

  1. In your daily life, what is capturing the most attention of your soul — the physical realm or the spiritual? What specific habits or patterns reveal where your soul is actually developing?
  2. Have you been seeking spiritual power primarily through prayer and religious activity, while neglecting the development of your soul through knowledge and character formation? What would need to change?
  3. Where in your life is God using a trial, a loss, or a prolonged difficulty to develop capacity in your soul — and are you resisting it or yielding to it?
  4. Reflecting on the distinction between righteousness and holiness — do you have internal conflict between what you believe, your values, your discipline, and your conduct? What is the root of that conflict?
  5. Are there areas where you have been applying the blood of Jesus as a source of strength rather than understanding the Spirit of God as the source of power? How does that distinction change how you approach your spiritual life?
