Mental Weakness: Understanding Satan's Primary Target

Mental Weakness: Understanding Satan's Primary Target

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 11 October 2022

Satan's greatest objective is not to kill you, but to control your mind, for mental weakness leads to the destruction of your entire life.

The spiritual battle believers face is fundamentally a battle for the mind. Whoever controls the mind controls the physical world, and Satan understands this principle better than most Christians. This sermon unpacks why mental fortitude is the Christian's greatest defense and reveals the specific weapons God has provided to strengthen the mind against Satan's relentless attacks.

Teaching Overview

  1. The spiritual battle always culminates in the mind because control of the mind determines control of the physical world.
  2. Satan's primary goal is mental weakness, not physical death, because he needs people alive to use them for his destructive purposes.
  3. Mental deliverance and demonic deliverance are distinct battles requiring different spiritual remedies and weapons.
  4. Believers must fortify their minds through God's Word, guard their imaginations, and develop mental strength by knowing God's character.
  5. The helmet of salvation must protect the mind, and every believer will face trials that test whether they will choose Christ or deny Him.
  6. Speaking God's Word aloud is the primary weapon for pulling down strongholds and casting down imaginations that exalt themselves against God's truth.

The Spiritual Battle is Won or Lost in the Mind

  • The mind is the most active part of the soul, divided into conscious and subconscious dimensions.
  • The subconscious mind operates continuously—even during sleep and when conscious attention is absent—making it the most powerful force controlling your reflexive actions and behaviors.
  • Whoever controls the mind controls the physical world and therefore controls the entire life of that person.

"As a man thinks, it is so easy" for Satan to control every aspect of his existence.

Satan's Primary Objective: Control, Not Death

  • Satan gains nothing by killing you because death is God's domain alone, and once you die, Satan loses all power over you.
  • Satan's interest is exclusively in keeping you alive so he can use you as an instrument for his evil purposes.
  • When Satan "gets hold of somebody's mind," he simultaneously gets hold of their entire life, will, and influence.

"Satan doesn't go to the cemetery and recruit the dead. So it is in Satan's best interest to have you alive so that he can use you for his evil and wicked will."

"It means they are mind, their life, will be influenced and controlled by Satan."

Understanding Death and the Spirit of Death

  • Death in essence means to exist without life—to be crippled and tormented, not to cease existing physically.
  • Demons in hell are themselves tormented and pass torment to those confined there; they cry out in fear of being sent to the pit.
  • The Bible calls those in hell "the dead" not because they have ceased to exist, but because they have no life, no freedom, and no hope—only eternal torment.
  • Believers who pass away are described as "asleep" because they experience no torment and await resurrection in peace.

"Death in essence means to cripple you, not to have life. Death doesn't mean to die. It is torment that the devil is after."

"The people in hell are also alive. Everyone in hell is alive right now. But they are considered the dead because they have no life."

Correcting the Misinterpretation of John 10

  • John 10:10—"The thief comes but to steal, kill and destroy"—refers not to Satan but to false shepherds and wolves in sheep's clothing within the church.
  • Satan is never called a thief in Scripture; He is called a serpent and a dragon.
  • False shepherds pretend to be servants of God while robbing the congregation of abundant life in Christ.
  • Jesus, the good shepherd, contrasts with these false leaders by laying down His life for His flock and providing abundant life.

"The thief that comes to steal, kill and destroy is not Satan. It's talking about false shepherds."

"Satan is never called a thief. He's called a serpent. He's called the dragon. Those are his titles."

Satan's Attack on Jesus: A Mental Assault

  • When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, every temptation was designed to weaken His mind and break His resolve, not to physically harm Him.
  • Satan questioned Jesus' identity ("If you are the Son of God"), attempted to make Him doubt His Father's provision and protection, and tried to get Him to abandon His mission.
  • Satan's strategy with Jesus was identical to his strategy with all believers: to create mental doubt, fear, and despair that leads to abandonment of faith.

"Satan was trying to get Jesus to quit. He was trying to break him mentally."

Mental Deliverance Is Different From Demonic Deliverance

  • Not every spiritual battle requires the same solution; every issue has a specific remedy ordained by God.
  • Mental deliverance—the healing and reprogramming of the mind through God's Word—is fundamentally different from casting out demons.
  • Praying "I plead the blood of Jesus in my mind" does not remove a stronghold because strongholds are mental structures built through imagination and false belief, not demonic possession.
  • Using the same formula for every spiritual problem—whether witchcraft, generational curses, demonic oppression, or mental strongholds—will not work because they require different weapons.

"Every single issue has a specific remedy that God has ordained for it. You can't use one solution for it all. It doesn't work like that."

Strongholds Begin With Imagination

  • A stronghold in the mind first manifests as imaginations—false scenarios, worst-case outcomes, and lies about God's character and your future.
  • Most battles Christians face exist only in the mind as imaginations; they are not physical realities yet.
  • If Satan can get you to imagine the worst, to imagine failure, to imagine abandonment by God, he has already weakened your mental state and captured your faith.

"The first effect of a stronghold in the mind is it starts to bring imaginations."

"Most of the things you battle with are just in your mind."

Where Thoughts Go, the Body Must Follow

  • Your thoughts are the blueprint for your actions; your body inevitably follows the direction your mind has already gone.
  • The imagination of the heart—the content of your thoughts—determines the trajectory of your entire life.
  • If your imagination is evil, envious, lustful, jealous, or fearful, you are already mentally weak and Satan can use you because your mind is already his tool.

"Where your thoughts go, your body will definitely, for sure, for real, guaranteed will and must follow."

The Helmet of Salvation Protects Your Mind

  • The first armor a believer must put on is the helmet of salvation, which means your mind must be saved and liberated in the same way your spirit is.
  • Salvation must manifest not only in your spirit but also in your mind; the salvation you have received must transform your mental state.
  • A person wearing the helmet of salvation cannot be defeated because their mind is protected by the assurance of Christ's victory.

"The first armor that you need to put on is the helmet of salvation. Your mind needs to be saved."

The Purpose of Spiritual Armor

  • Spiritual armor does not mean you will not be touched or feel pain; it means when the enemy attacks, he will encounter resistance and not achieve his destructive goal.
  • Just as a bulletproof vest does not prevent impact but prevents penetration, spiritual armor protects your core—your spirit and eternal destiny—even when trials affect your body.
  • The full armor of God guarantees your survival and ultimate victory, not exemption from trials.

"The full armor doesn't mean you will not be touched. The full armor means if you touch me, you will feel armor."

Every Believer Will Face the Choice to Deny or Confess Christ

  • Every Christian will encounter moments of persecution, rejection, embarrassment, and suffering that force a choice: deny Christ to avoid pain, or confess Him and endure.
  • God's protection does not begin with angels surrounding you; it begins with you fortifying yourself in God through knowledge of His Word and character.
  • If you love God only for His protection and blessings, you will betray Him the moment that protection is removed, because your love is conditional, not genuine.

"Every Christian will go through embarrassing moments. Every Christian will go through rejection. Every believer will go through these things. It's part of the journey."

Job's Example: Knowledge of God Sustains Faith in Loss

  • When Job lost everything—his family, his property, his health—he did not turn against God because he possessed deep knowledge of God's character and sovereignty.
  • Job understood that his children and possessions were never truly his; they belonged to God, and he was only privileged to steward them temporarily.
  • Because Job knew God was good and in control, he could worship even in devastation, knowing that God either would restore or his loss was part of God's perfect plan.

"He had knowledge concerning God."

The Three Hebrew Boys: Mental Fortitude in the Fire

  • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego possessed such mental strength and knowledge of God that they could face the burning furnace without compromise.
  • They declared absolute commitment to God: "Even if God does not deliver us from the fire, we will not worship your god. We will never serve you. We cannot do it."
  • Their certainty was not based on guaranteed rescue but on knowing that their God is worthy of worship regardless of whether He saves them from death.

"We will never worship your God. We will never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever. Worship your God."

Casting Down Imaginations Is Your Primary Weapon

  • Your weapons of warfare are not physical but spiritual, and they are "mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations."
  • The first action in mental warfare is to identify and examine the imaginations occupying your mind—lustful thoughts, jealousy, envy, fear, or thoughts of suicide and failure.
  • Casting down imaginations is not a one-time prayer; it is an active, continuous process of identifying false thoughts and replacing them with God's truth.

"Our weapons of warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, casting down imaginations."

Your Voice Interrupts Evil Thoughts

  • Speaking God's Word aloud is the primary weapon for interrupting and pulling down strongholds; your voice breaks the power of evil imagination.
  • When Satan speaks to your mind (not physically but through thought), you counter with your voice speaking Scripture: "It is written."
  • Reading God's Word silently in your mind is not sufficient; you must speak it aloud to activate its power and interrupt the stronghold.

"Your voice will always pull down your imagination."

"That is why you can interrupt a thought by speaking."

God's Word Must Be Spoken, Not Just Read

  • God's Word was never designed to be read passively; it must be declared and spoken aloud to be fully effective.
  • The Word of God is "quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit," which means it brings distinction and revelation to your thinking.
  • When you speak God's Word, it pierces through deception and shows you what is truly driving your thoughts and emotions.

"The word of God was never meant to be read mentally. It was always meant to be spoken or declared."

"The word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow and of the joints and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Truth Immediately Sets You Free

  • "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free"—freedom is not the result of prayer or waiting; freedom is immediate upon encountering truth.
  • The moment truth enters your mind and you recognize it, the shell Satan has used to imprison you is broken, and you are free.
  • Truth is not a future promise; it is a present reality that liberates you the instant it is known and believed.

"You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free immediately."

Knowledge of God's Character Pulls Down Every High Thing

  • Every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God must be brought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.
  • The "high things" are thoughts, beliefs, fears, and imaginations that contradict God's Word; they are defeated by knowledge of God's true character.
  • If you know that God is good, that He is in control, that He cannot lie, and that He has promised to never leave you, then fears about the future have no power.

"Every high thing that exalted itself against the knowledge of God."

Mental State Determines How You Pray

  • There is a correct way to pray and an incorrect way to pray; the difference is your mental state—whether you are praying in faith or in doubt.
  • Praying while imagining the worst, while full of anxiety, while convinced of failure, or while complaining means you are praying in the wrong mental state.
  • Prayer with a weak mind does not receive because the mental state contradicts the prayer; you cannot pray "God is faithful" while believing "I will never make it."

"There is a correct way to pray, and there is the wrong way to pray."

"The Bible says, you don't receive because you pray. Meaning there is the wrong way to pray. Why do people pray the wrong way? It's because your mental state is bad."

Self-Image Before God Determines Your Presentation to Him

  • How you think of yourself determines how you present yourself before God; your self-perception is your responsibility, not God's.
  • If you believe yourself to be worthless, God cannot make you valuable because you have already agreed with the lie about yourself.
  • Faith works both ways—you can have faith in negativity just as much as faith in positivity; if you believe "I will never make it," that belief becomes substance and shapes your reality.

"How you think of yourself presents you before God."

True Hope Is Certainty, Not Wishful Thinking

  • Hope in the biblical sense is not optimistic guessing; it is absolute certainty based on God's promises and character.
  • Believers do not mourn like those without hope because we have the certainty that death is not the end and we will be reunited with our loved ones in eternity.
  • Fake hope is wishful thinking ("I think it will work out"), while true hope is the assured conviction ("I know God's Word is true, and therefore I know this will be okay").

"Hope has to do with the future. Hope doesn't have anything to do with uncertainty. Hope has certainty."

"The hope that comes from the Holy Spirit is assured. It's an assurance that things are going to be okay."

Calm and Quiet Spirit Is True Strength

  • Mental toughness is not displayed through shouting, arguing, or fighting; true strength is a calm and quiet spirit that remains unmoved by circumstances.
  • Anger, loud declarations, and aggression often reveal weakness and mental instability, not strength.
  • A believer whose mind is truly fortified in God remains peaceful, composed, and confident regardless of what surrounds them.

"A calm and quiet spirit is strength, true strength."

The Mind of Christ Is a Mindset, Not a Declaration

  • "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" refers not to a moment of prayer but to adopting the same way of thinking that Jesus possessed.
  • Jesus maintained His divine nature and purpose even in human flesh; He did not compromise His mission or lose His peace regardless of opposition.
  • Possessing the mind of Christ means thinking as He thought—with absolute trust in the Father, with acceptance of suffering for righteousness, and with unwavering commitment to God's will.

"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."

"It is a way to form thinking."

Every Believer Must Take Mental Health Seriously

  • Mental illness among Christians is often a sign that spiritual life has become unbalanced—either over-spiritualized and disconnected from reality, or neglecting the reality of spiritual warfare.
  • Spiritual life should flow from the Holy Spirit to your spirit, to your soul (mind, will, emotions), and then to your body; if this flow is broken, mental health suffers.
  • If you claim to work with the Lord but your mental state is troubled, fragmented, or unstable, you have a problem that must be addressed.

"Every believer must take their mental health extremely serious."

"If you claim to work with the Lord, but your mental state is not okay, you have to know that there is a problem."

Prayer Alone Is Not the Solution for Mental Health

  • Prayer is one tool for mental health, but it is not the only tool, and many people pray while remaining deeply troubled and unstable.
  • A person can pray fervently and still complain constantly, still be anxious, and still live in fear—these contradictions reveal a mental state that prayer alone has not healed.
  • Mental health requires reprogramming your mind through God's Word, examining your imaginations, speaking truth aloud, and developing knowledge of God's character.

"You don't fix the mind by prayer. Prayer is one of the ways, but it's not the way you fix the mind."

Examine Your Imaginations Honestly

  • Begin the process of mental fortification by truthfully examining what imaginations occupy your mind: What do you imagine about your future? What do you fear? What do you replay?
  • Some imaginations are lustful, some are jealous, some are murderous, some are suicidal—whatever they are, they must be identified and brought into captivity to Christ.
  • Stop hiding behind false spirituality and genuinely confess to God the true content of your mind; you cannot be healed while pretending.

"What is the content of your imagination? If your imagination is already on the wrong track, your mind is already weak."

Key Definitions

Stronghold — A mental structure of false belief or fear that has been reinforced through repeated imagination and agreement; it is pulled down not by prayer against demons but by speaking God's Word to reprogram the mind.

Imagination — The mental pictures, scenarios, and beliefs you rehearse in your mind about yourself, others, God, and your future; the first manifestation of a stronghold and the target of spiritual warfare.

Mental Deliverance — The healing and reprogramming of the conscious and subconscious mind through God's Word, distinct from demonic deliverance and requiring the speaking of truth to interrupt false thought patterns.

The Helmet of Salvation — Spiritual protection of the mind that comes from knowing you are saved, liberated, and eternally secure in Christ; it protects your mental state from Satan's accusations and despair.

Knowledge of God — Deep, practical understanding of God's character, promises, and power; the foundation that prevents you from agreeing with Satan's lies about God and about yourself.

Hope — Not wishful thinking but absolute certainty about the future based on God's character and promises; the confident assurance that things will be okay because God is faithful.

Key Takeaways

  • The mind is the battlefield where all spiritual victory or defeat is determined. Satan's primary target is not your body or your circumstances but your thought life, for whoever controls the mind controls everything else.

  • Mental weakness is Satan's goal because he needs you alive to use you. Unlike God, who does not need humanity, Satan is entirely dependent on people to carry out his destructive will.

  • Mental deliverance requires different weapons than demonic deliverance. Not every spiritual problem is solved the same way; strongholds are pulled down by speaking God's Word aloud, not by prayer formulas.

  • Your imagination is the first line of defense or the first line of compromise. If your imaginations are filled with fear, envy, lust, or despair, your mind is already weak and Satan can use you.

  • Speaking God's Word aloud is your primary weapon against strongholds and imaginations. The voice interrupts evil thoughts; reading silently does not activate the full power of Scripture.

  • Truth immediately sets you free; it is not a future promise but a present reality. The moment you know the truth about God's character and God's promises, the chains Satan has used fall away.

  • Your mental state determines the effectiveness of your prayers and your entire spiritual life. Praying while believing in failure, while full of anxiety, or while complaining means your mind contradicts your words.

  • Every believer will face trials and moments of choice where they must decide whether to confess Christ or deny Him. This is not a sign of weakness or lack of protection; it is part of the journey and the test of genuine faith.

  • A calm and quiet spirit is the truest expression of mental strength. Anger, shouting, and aggression reveal mental instability, while peace amid pressure reveals a mind fortified in God.

  • Knowledge of God's character is the antidote to every high thing that exalts itself against God's truth. If you know God is good, in control, and faithful, fear and despair have no power over you.

Reflection Questions

  1. What imaginations regularly occupy your mind when you face uncertainty or pressure—and what does the content of those imaginations reveal about what you truly believe about God's character and His faithfulness to you?

  2. In what areas of your life are you praying words of faith while your mental state—your actual beliefs, your fears, your self-image—contradicts those prayers, and what would change if you aligned your mind with what you are asking God to do?

  3. Which specific "high thing" in your life—a fear, a doctor's report, a broken relationship, a financial crisis, a person's opinion of you—is currently exalted above the Word of God in your mind, and what truth from Scripture directly contradicts it?

  4. How would your daily life change if you truly believed and acted on the truth that Satan wants you alive so he can use you, and therefore your greatest defense is to give your life completely to Christ so you cannot be used by the enemy?

  5. What step can you take this week to begin the process of mental fortification—speaking God's Word aloud, examining your imaginations honestly, developing deeper knowledge of God's character through Scripture—instead of waiting for a prayer or a sermon to magically transform your mental state?
