Weapons of Warfare: Dominion, Character, and the Foundation of True Spiritual Authority
Weapons Of Warfare · Part 2 of 2
Before you can war against what is outside you, you must first conquer what is within.
Spiritual warfare is not simply a matter of invoking the name of Jesus over external enemies. True authority over demonic forces is built on three pillars: dominion over your assigned territory, a disciplined prayer life, and an inwardly transformed character. Without these foundations, spiritual warfare becomes powerless performance — and demons know the difference.
Teaching Overview
- Believers must possess legal dominion over their own bodies and assigned territories before engaging in external spiritual warfare.
- Authority and power without dominion are ineffective — dominion must be actively fought for and possessed.
- Many spiritual problems are rooted in character deficiencies, not demonic possession, and require transformation rather than deliverance.
- A consistent prayer life is the foundation of spiritual strength, resistance to temptation, and effective warfare.
- Internal deliverance — conforming the soul to the spirit — must precede any attempt to deal with external demonic forces.
Key Distinctions
| Authority | Power | Dominion | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | The legal right to act in God's name | The force to enforce that right | The possessed territory over which authority and power operate |
| How it is received | Built within the believer by God | Built within the believer by God | Must be actively fought for and taken |
| Biblical basis | Given through commission and calling | Given through commission and calling | God said "let them have dominion" — not "they have dominion" |
| Without the other | Authority without dominion is powerless | Power without dominion has no jurisdiction | Dominion validates and activates both authority and power |
| Practical effect | Grants the right to act | Provides the force to act | Defines where you can legitimately act |
| Character Issues | Demonic Oppression | |
|---|---|---|
| Root cause | Soul patterns, habit, and undisciplined flesh | Demonic spirits exploiting weakness or legal ground |
| What it looks like | Repeated sin, self-discipline failure, unrenewed mind | Manifestation, compulsion beyond natural desire |
| Solution | Prayer, Word, repentance, and soul transformation | Legal eviction through authority, dominion, and power |
| Deliverance needed? | No — character change is required | Yes — a spirit must be cast out |
| How to identify | Examine whether the issue is natural biology or spiritual compulsion | Discernment by the Spirit reveals the true identity of the spirit |
| Prayer Life | No Prayer Life | |
|---|---|---|
| Spiritual result | Fortified, built up, resistant to temptation | Weak, vulnerable, falling for every bait |
| Character result | Soul conforms to spirit; transformation begins | Soul dominates; sinful patterns persist |
| Warfare capacity | Can stand in the face of threats without fear | Lacks internal confidence; distorted self-image |
| Biblical example | Daniel — prayed three times daily; immovable before threats | Those who fall in temptation through their own desires |
| Internal Deliverance | External Deliverance | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | The soul, character, and self-discipline | Demonic spirits operating outside the believer |
| Method | Prayer, Word of God, repentance, transformation | Casting out by authority, power, and dominion |
| Required first? | Yes — must precede external warfare | Only effective after internal work is done |
| Sign of completion | Interest in God surpasses interest in self | Demons find no legal ground in you |
| Spirit | Soul | |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | The new creation — born again, never existed before | Carries memories, habits, and patterns of the old man |
| Nature | Righteous — a thief in the spirit is not a thief | Struggling — the soul may wrestle with sinful tendencies |
| Needs | None — it is already renewed in Christ | Transformation — must be conformed to the spirit |
| Governed by | The Holy Spirit | The mind, will, and emotions — renewed through the Word |
| Worship as Command | Worship as Choice | |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Manipulation — forces an outcome | Love — freely given from a knowing heart |
| What it produces | Compliance, not relationship | True intimacy and genuine ministry to God |
| Biblical ground | No verse commands man was created to worship | Worship arises from encountering and knowing God |
| Who uses it | The devil — controls people through commanded devotion | A believer who has come to know God and gives freely |
| Prophesy | Prophet | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A word or declaration about things to come | A person called to reveal what is hidden in the realm of the Spirit |
| Primary function | Declares an outcome | Instructs, interprets the invisible, and preserves |
| Sufficient alone? | No — prophecy does not preserve | Yes — a prophet can preserve a nation |
| Biblical example | Words given to many | Elisha revealing enemy battle plans; Samuel preserving Israel |
| Testing | Temptation | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | God — to develop and prove character | Demonic spirits — exploiting known weaknesses |
| Purpose | To build faith and reveal what is inside | To call on inner weakness and cause the believer to fall |
| Method | Circumstances, trials, and pressure | Targeted baiting through people, environments, and desires |
| Response required | Endurance and trust | Resistance through prayer and transformed character |
The Nature of Dominion and Legal Ground
- God gave man authority and power by creation, but dominion must be actively possessed — God said "let them have dominion," not "they have dominion."
- Man holds the lease of the earth for 6,000 years; no spirit — angelic or demonic — can operate on earth independent of a human host because the legal ground belongs to man.
- Casting out a demon requires legal ground, not just the name of Jesus — a believer can evict a demon from their own body because the body belongs to their spirit, and the only lawful occupant is the Holy Spirit.
"God is not taking back dominion, He gave it to man to have dominion. Until the lease of man is done on earth."
"Any spirit that comes on earth cannot function independent of a man because man has the lease of the earth."
Authority Without Dominion Is Powerless
- Authority and power are rendered useless without the domain in which to exercise them — like a police officer with a badge and a gun who can only make arrests within his jurisdiction.
- The sons of Sceva attempted to cast out demons without legal ground or spiritual authority, and the demon responded: "Jesus we know, Paul we know — but who are you?"
- Demons do not flee because you use the name of Jesus; they flee because you carry a spiritual reputation established through prayer, character, and legitimate dominion.
"You don't evict the devil simply because you use the name of Jesus. You have to have legal ground to cast out a devil."
"Because God never gave us a powerless authority."
The Spiritual Jurisdiction of the New Creation
- The original man's jurisdiction was land and air; the new creation — born again — has a heavenly jurisdiction that extends over the air, the land, the water, and hell.
- The new man's spirit is a completely new being that never existed before; the soul, however, retains memories and patterns of the old life and must be conformed to the spirit.
- Your body is your house, not you — sickness is a problem with the house, not with the person who lives inside it.
"The new man's jurisdiction is heavenly places. The air, the land, the water and hell."
The Role of the Prophet in Spiritual Warfare
- The number one function of a prophet is not to give predictions but to reveal what is hidden in the realm of the Spirit, interpret the invisible, and bring God's people up to speed on spiritual realities their natural eyes cannot see.
- By a prophet was Israel delivered and by a prophet was it preserved — a nation cannot be delivered by a pastor, evangelist, apostle, or teacher; only a prophet carries that mandate.
- It is better to have a prophet than a prophecy, because prophesy does not preserve — a prophet does.
"The prophet is the interpreter of what is invisible. That is the work of a prophet."
"It is better to have a prophet than a prophecy."
Character vs. Demonic Oppression
- Many people in deliverance lines do not need a demon cast out — they need to change their character, and God can help them do this by His Spirit.
- The spirit and the soul are two different people: a person struggling with the impulse to steal is not a thief in their spirit — their soul is struggling, and that soul needs to be refined, not exorcised.
- Natural biological responses, human weakness, and undisciplined desires are not automatically demonic — misidentifying these as demonic spirits leads to ineffective warfare.
"Some people that are going in deliverance lines, they don't need deliverance. They need to change their character."
The Foundation: Prayer Life
- A person without a prayer life will always have self-discipline issues, because prayer disconnects a believer from their inner weaknesses and transforms them from the inside out.
- Temptation works by calling on what is already inside — demonic spirits observe character weaknesses and send targeted baits; prayer removes those hooks so the bait finds nothing to catch.
- Daniel prayed three times daily and stood without fear before death threats and the fiery furnace — his prayer life made him untouchable by temptation.
"Anybody that does not have a prayer life will always fall into sin."
"Prayer fortifies you. Prayer builds you up so that when the devil comes you can resist him."
Deliverance Through Preaching
- Jesus Himself was anointed to preach deliverance — certain teachings rebuke and deliver, because not every spiritual problem is a demon but a programmed pattern of a demon.
- Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God; the Word preached changes the soul, and a changed soul removes the very ground on which demons operate.
- Preaching that calls people to transformation will always offend — the Greek word used is skandalizo, meaning to put a stumbling block — because people do not like messages that require them to change.
"The livrance can be preached. What preaching do? Preaching changes your soul."
Internal Deliverance Before External Warfare
- Before engaging external demonic forces, a believer must deal with themselves first — a demon looking at you must find no open doors, no legal ground, nothing to exploit.
- The sign that you are truly delivered is when your interest in God surpasses your interest in yourself — this is not a spiritual gift, it is a fruit of character.
- You cannot pray for others with confidence when you have unresolved internal distortion — the subconscious memory of personal compromise undermines bold faith.
"Before I can even tell you how you deal with demons outside of yourself, this is very important. Before dealing with external demons, deal with your internal character."
Worship as Command vs. Worship as Choice
- God never commanded Adam to worship Him — commanded worship is manipulation, not love.
- Worship is not something human beings were created to do by design; it is something a believer freely chooses when they have come to know God personally.
- The gift you give God that He does not already have is your freely chosen love and worship — it must differ from everyone else's because your personal relationship with Him must differ.
"God never ordered Adam to worship Him. Because if I tell you worship me, I am manipulating you. That's not love."
Key Definitions
Dominion — The legal possession of a territory that validates and activates authority and power; it must be actively fought for and taken, as God said "let them have dominion" — not "they have dominion."
Authority — The legal right, built within a believer by God, to act and enforce God's will within a given domain.
Power — The force to enforce authority, built within the believer by God, functioning only where dominion exists.
The Lease of the Earth — The 6,000-year period during which man holds legal governance of the earth; no spirit can operate on earth independent of a human host because the earth's dominion belongs to man until the lease expires.
A Prophet — Not primarily one who predicts events, but the interpreter of what is invisible — the one who reveals to God's people what is hidden in the realm of the Spirit, instructs them in spiritual realities, and stands as the mouth of God.
Skandalizo — The Greek word translated "offended" in Matthew 13:57; literally, to place a stumbling block — what happens when transformational truth causes people to reject the messenger rather than receive the message.
Key Takeaways
- Dominion must be possessed, not assumed — God said "let them have dominion," which means it is a permission given, not an automatic inheritance; believers must actively take ground.
- Legal ground determines spiritual effectiveness — You cannot cast out a demon anywhere you wish; authority only functions within your domain, beginning with your own body and spirit.
- Most spiritual warfare begins with character transformation — Before confronting external spirits, address the internal soul issues that give those spirits access in the first place.
- A consistent prayer life is the non-negotiable foundation — Without prayer, temptation will always find its mark because the inner weakness it targets has never been removed.
- Prophesy informs; a prophet preserves — A nation, a church, or an individual is not preserved by words alone but by the sustained ministry of one who carries access to the heavenly realm and the mandate to interpret it.
Reflection Questions
- Where in your life are you attempting to exercise spiritual authority without having established dominion — and what would it look like to actually possess that ground?
- Are the challenges you currently attribute to demonic attack actually rooted in unaddressed character issues or an undisciplined soul? What would honest self-examination reveal?
- What does your current prayer life actually look like — and if temptation arrived today, would your prayer habits have fortified you enough to resist it?
- Is there an area where you have been seeking external deliverance — fire, prayer lines, declarations — when the real need is internal transformation through the Word and prayer?
- If a demon were to look at you today, what legal ground would it find? What specific step can you take this week to close that door?
Prayers and Declarations
Closing Prayer
"Father, I have spoken your word from your heart for your people. I pray that those who are watching from home, those who are here, every one of them will be blessed and will be touched by a special blessing. Give us the grace of Father to be in prayer and to stand before you and to seek after you. That our lives will not be the same from this day. I pray all Lord that you stand mighty as you are forever in our lives. Let what was impossible become possible from this hour. I thank you that Lord, the mighty Your mighty deliverance delivering hand is upon each and every one of them. Let true change and transformation begin inside and pull and over flow outside. Bless everybody that is watching now in Jesus' name."
Proclamation of Victory
"Your battle is settled. In Jesus' name. No spirit will be able to challenge you or fight you from today."

And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea." (KJV)
