Your Brightness Pt 2: Dying to Shine — How Your Spirit Is Revealed Through Transfiguration
Your Brightness · Part 2 of 2
Your spirit cannot shine until the flesh dies — and the good news is, you are already dead.
Transfiguration is not merely a change of appearance — it is the revelation of your true nature through death. The same process that led Jesus to the cross leads you into the fullness of your spirit. You do not need more external solutions; everything God has ever spoken to you is already embedded within your spirit, waiting for you to rule over it.
Teaching Overview
- Number one rule of shining is you have to die.
- The Holy Spirit is the oil that fuels the light of your spirit, and without His presence no light can be lit.
- God has given you the spirit of power, love, and a sound mind — these three form the nature of your spirit and are essential for it to shine.
- The compass of your life is in your spirit — direction comes from ruling over and discerning your spirit, not from external circumstances or solutions.
- Every answer to every prayer you have ever prayed is already deposited in your spirit.
Key Distinctions
| Talent | Spiritual Gift | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your physical ability | An endowed ability from God |
| How it is acquired | Can be trained, practiced, and developed | Given by God; cannot be taught or studied into existence |
| Transferability | Can be learned by others to a degree | Passed on, not taught; spiritual things are explained, not manufactured |
| Seasonal relevance | Needed at certain times, not at others | The light in your spirit is needed by all men at all times |
| Limitations | Will not be needed in every season | Functions across every season when your spirit is ruling |
| Heart (Emotion) | Spirit | |
|---|---|---|
| What moves it | What you like, enjoy, or feel compassionate about | A divine pull that may contradict logic and emotion |
| How it feels | You are drawn toward something you want | Everything in you may be saying no, yet your spirit is interested |
| Source of movement | Internal desire and affection | God's direction embedded within you |
| Reliability for direction | Subject to preference and feeling | The compass of your life — the seat of God's embedded plan |
| Soul | Spirit | |
|---|---|---|
| Current function | Navigating your daily life — the active driver of decisions | The true inner man, where God's plan, direction, and power are deposited |
| Relationship to law | Subject to the law while alive in the flesh | Already dead in Christ and therefore free from condemnation under the law |
| Where direction resides | External orientation — circumstances, emotion, logic | Internal — God points you back to your spirit so you know what to do |
| What rules it | Often ruled by fear, external solutions, and the flesh | To be ruled by you — "he that ruleth his spirit" is greater than one who takes a city |
| External Solutions | Internal Spirit Discernment | |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Deriving answers from circumstances, relationships, trends, and prayer outcomes | Looking inward to discern what your spirit is pulling you toward |
| Limitation | Tied to seasons — what worked before will not always work again | Your spirit carries an ability allocated for every season |
| What sustains it | Talent — useful at certain times but not all | Your spirit — the light within is needed by all men at all times |
| Result of ignoring it | You hold on to what is past, miss what God drops each year | You move with God's timing and step into the next thing before others see it |
The Transfiguration and Spiritual Death
- Jesus was transfigured before His disciples, and that transfiguration was directly connected to His coming death and resurrection — He instructed them to "tell no man of this until the Son of Man is raised from the dead."
- When Jesus came down from the mountain, the dynamic of His ministry completely changed — He began to speak more of death, resurrection, and the glory to be revealed.
- The transfiguration was the moment when the true nature of Jesus was revealed to His disciples, and it happened because He was about to be plunged into the darkness of the cross.
"When he got to this place where Jesus now is transfigured for the cross, the dynamic of his ministry completely changed."
The Oil That Fuels the Light
- The Holy Spirit is the oil that fuels the lamp of your spirit — when He comes into your life, He is the fuel that makes the light possible.
- A person can be highly gifted but ineffective if they lack the presence of God, because no light can be lit without oil.
- Jesus declared, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me and He has anointed Me" — meaning the Holy Spirit produced the oil, and because He produced it, Jesus was able to operate in His assignment.
"No light can be lit without oil."
Recognition Through Transformation
- When the risen Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene at the tomb, she did not recognize Him by sight — she recognized Him only by the sound of His voice when He spoke her name.
- True transformation means you no longer look like where you came from, but your nature and voice remain the same.
- Your brightness is not identified by your external form but by the sound of who you are — your spiritual identity.
"When God lifts you from what you used to be to what you become, you don't look like where you came from but you sound the same."
You Must Die for Your Spirit to Shine
- The spirit cannot be revealed until the flesh dies — just as a seed must be buried in the ground alone before it can multiply, your spirit is waiting for the body to die so it can come forth.
- Many people are struggling to shine because they do not want to die — they resist the burial that is necessary for multiplication.
- You are already spiritually dead in Christ, but most believers are unaware of this reality, and Satan exploits that ignorance.
"There is a way you are struggling to shine, is because you don't want to die."
"Satan knows that you're not conscious, that you are dead."
The Living Sacrifice Paradox
- A living sacrifice is a paradox — every sacrifice is dead, yet you are a sacrifice that is dead but still alive.
- A dead person does not choose where they will be buried or what they will wear — yet as a living sacrifice, you still try to determine the outcome and placement of your own life.
- Anyone who is still living under the law has not yet embraced their death in Christ — God's solution was for you to die so that you are no longer subject to condemnation.
"There's no living sacrifice. Every sacrifice is dead. But you are a sacrifice that is dead, but yet is still alive."
Power, Love, and a Sound Mind
- God has not given you the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind — these three things must be in place for your spirit to shine, because they are the nature of your spirit.
- Power is the endowed ability from God — it is not talent, but a gifted capacity that creates room for you in every season.
- For every season and situation you face, God has allocated a specific power — the challenge is that when seasons change, people continue reaching for their talent rather than accessing the spiritual gift deposited for that moment.
"In order for your spirit to start shining, these three things have to be in place."
Talent vs. Spiritual Gift
- Talent is your physical ability — it can be trained, practiced, and developed to a degree by human effort.
- A spiritual gift is an endowed ability from God that cannot be studied into existence — it is given, not acquired, and spiritual things can be passed on but not manufactured through instruction.
- Your talent was meant to maintain you while you discover your gift — but your spirit's light is needed by all men at all times, in every season, in a way that talent alone can never sustain.
"Don't confuse talent for a spiritual gift."
The Compass Is in Your Spirit
- The compass of your life is in your spirit — God's plan and His will are not external destinations to be pursued, they are embedded within you.
- Prayer, fasting, and giving are not the source of direction — these things enhance your ability to discern your spirit, but when you pray, God points you back to your spirit so you know what to do.
- Angels are assigned to keep you in your ways — the ways your spirit is already pulling you toward — not to introduce a foreign direction.
"The compass of life is in your spirit."
"Angels are supposed to nod you back where your spirit is pulling you."
Ruling Over Your Spirit
- The one who rules over his spirit is greater than the one who takes a city — spiritual dominion begins with mastering the inner man, not with external warfare or intercession.
- When you rule your spirit, everyone will come to your brightness — your brightness gives you influence to change cities and nations, just as Jesus illuminated what was within Him and the whole nation followed.
- Christians are not called to rule over demons first — they are called to rule over their own spirit, because the soul is currently navigating the ship and must be brought under the spirit's dominion.
"Anyone that can rule his spirit is greater than a person that can take it the city."
"You need to rule over your spirit to change this city. Rule over your spirit. Everyone will come to your brightness."
Discerning Seasonal Transitions
- God will sometimes allow what you have been doing to stop producing fruit in order to exhaust you with it and cause you to outgrow it — this is His way of moving you into the next season.
- Your spirit will pull away from something before the brook dries up — the ability to discern that pull means you are already positioned for the next thing while others are still waiting for the obvious sign.
- Every year, God deposits five things that need to be done in that year — most people miss all of them because they are focused on external resolutions rather than what has been dropped from heaven.
"Your spirit just told you the season for this thing is done. Let's move."
"Every year, God delivers five things that you need to do in a year. But people go through a year not even picking one."
Every Answer Is Already in Your Spirit
- God speaks more than once, yet man does not perceive it — He communicates through dreams and visions in deep sleep, opening the ears of men and sealing instruction within them.
- Every time God speaks to you, something is deposited in your spirit — when you are not listening, He places that instruction back in your spirit for you to find.
- There is nothing you have ever prayed for that God did not answer — you simply did not hear it, so it remains in your spirit, waiting to be discerned.
"Every single thing you have ever prayed for is in your spirit."
Key Definitions
Transfiguration — The process by which the true nature of your spirit is revealed through death, mirroring how Jesus' true nature was revealed as He moved toward the cross; not merely a change of clothes or appearance, but a full transformation of spiritual reality.
Spiritual Death — The state of being crucified with Christ, in which you are already dead to the law and to the flesh — "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live" — a reality most believers have not yet recognized or embraced.
Oil — The Holy Spirit as the fuel for the lamp of your spirit; without the presence and maintenance of the Holy Spirit, the light of your spirit cannot be lit or sustained.
Talent — Your physical ability; something that can be trained, practiced, and developed through human effort, but which is only relevant in certain seasons and cannot meet every spiritual need.
Spiritual Gift (Power) — The endowed ability from God that cannot be studied or self-acquired; it is given and can be passed on but not taught in the conventional sense, and it functions across every season.
Spirit — The inner man where God has embedded His plan, direction, and allocated power for every season; the compass of your life, and the seat of true illumination that must be ruled over and discerned.
Key Takeaways
- You must die for your spirit to shine — Resisting spiritual death is the primary reason people struggle to illuminate what God has placed within them.
- The Holy Spirit is the oil — without Him, no light is lit — Gifting without the presence of God produces an unlit lamp; the maintenance of the Holy Spirit determines how your spirit operates.
- God has given you power, love, and a sound mind for every season — These are not aspirations but the actual nature of your spirit, already deposited and available for every situation you face.
- The compass of your life is in your spirit, not in external circumstances — All direction, all answers to prayer, and all divine allocation for your next season are already within you, waiting to be discerned.
- Ruling your spirit is greater than taking a city — True influence over nations and people flows from mastering your inner man, not from external spiritual warfare or intercession alone.
Reflection Questions
- In what areas of your life are you still holding on to what God has already called you to release — and what fear is keeping you from embracing that death?
- Are you deriving your direction primarily from external circumstances, relationships, or spiritual phenomena — or are you learning to discern what your spirit is already pulling you toward?
- Can you identify a season in your life where your spirit was clearly pulling you away from something before the brook dried up — and did you move, or did you wait for the obvious sign?
- What is the difference, in your own daily experience, between your heart being moved and your spirit being moved? Can you give a specific example of each?
- If every answer to every prayer you have ever prayed is already deposited in your spirit, what would change about how you pray, how you meditate, and how you make decisions?
