Your Brightness: Shining Through Darkness by Embracing Your God-Given Assignment

Your Brightness · Part 1 of 2

Part 2
Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 8 November 2022

Your light is not something you are waiting to receive — it is already within you, waiting to be released in the darkness of your assignment.

Darkness is not the enemy of your brightness — it is the very condition that makes your brightness visible. You are already a light. The question has never been whether you carry light, but whether you will allow it to shine in the darkness where your assignment lives. This teaching dismantles the world's pursuit of external shine — through money, career, beauty, and followers — and returns the believer to the only source of true brightness: the God-ordained assignment placed within you before you were born.

Teaching Overview

  1. You are already a light by virtue of your regenerated spirit — the question is whether you will allow your brightness to shine.
  2. No one can shine outside of their assignment — not through money, career, beauty, or any external platform.
  3. Darkness is not your enemy but your opportunity — your assignment is found and fulfilled within it, not in escaping it.
  4. God orchestrates increasing darkness in your life to push you deeper into your purpose and reveal your true brightness.
  5. Embracing darkness is a posture of faith — faith requires the absence of visible answers so that God can create what does not yet exist.

The Difference Between Comfort and Peace

  • Peace is not a feeling — peace is information.
  • Jesus is the Prince of Peace, meaning He is the custodian and heir of peace, and because He holds it, He can give it to anyone.
  • Comfort soothes a person through pain without revealing the future; peace is a knowledge that surpasses understanding because it is anchored in what lies beyond the present circumstance.

"Many of you want comfort but you don't want peace. There's a big difference between comfort and peace. Comfort is when somebody suits your pain through the pain — it's gonna be okay, it's gonna be fine. Don't worry about it. They haven't told you the future. You don't know what is gonna happen. But they comfort you in the midst of it. That's called comfort. But God does not just want to give us comfort. He wants to give us peace."

  • Angels come to comfort, as they did with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane — but His peace came by knowing what He would see after the cross.
  • Because believers know what comes after death, they do not mourn as those without hope — this is peace, not merely comfort.

The Foundation and Purpose of Your Brightness

  • The Bible does not say you will become a light or that your light will one day arrive — it says arise and shine, because your brightness is already present within you.
  • When someone does not know who they are, they attempt to use others' platforms to be seen — but when that person moves away, they fall back into darkness.
  • Shining is not something God does on your behalf — when you shine, the glory of God is seen through you.

"When somebody doesn't know who they are, they don't know what they are. They use people to shine. So they will use somebody on the spotlight for them to be seen. But when that person moves away, they fall into darkness again."

The Light Already Within You

  • Every born-again believer is already a light — the issue is not whether the light exists, but whether it has been turned on.
  • Just as a light fixture is still a light even when it is switched off, a regenerated person carries the nature of light regardless of whether they are currently shining.
  • The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord — the moment a person gives their life to Christ, they already carry illumination within their spirit.

"Anybody that has a spirit and is a regenerated person is already a light. When God looks at you, He sees a candle."

  • The parable of the wise and foolish virgins illustrates that there are things a believer must do to maintain the flame of their spirit — those who neglect it find their brightness gone at the critical moment.
  • God has not given believers a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind — this is the nature of the light already within the regenerated spirit.

God's Dependence on Human Brightness

  • God chooses to reveal His glory through human vessels — this is not incidental but intentional.
  • When Jesus was present on earth, He chose twelve men through whom His glory would continue to be revealed after His departure.
  • The disciples bore witness to the glory of the only begotten of the Father — even under arrest and beatings, they declared it was the risen Jesus doing the works.

"The question is not that if you're not a light. It has been settled. You are a light."

Jesus' Teaching on Light

  • Jesus declares that believers are the light of the world — a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden.
  • The permission to shine does not rest with Jesus — it rests with the believer.
  • The word let in "let your light so shine" is a deliberate instruction of allowance — shining is not a matter of prayer but a matter of permission the believer grants themselves.

"Let your light so shine. Let — meaning the permission to shine is not with him. It's with you. And if you don't shine, nobody can glorify God."

No One Shines Outside Their Assignment

  • The hidden years of Jesus — from childhood to age thirty — are undocumented because He was functioning as a carpenter, which had nothing to do with His assignment.
  • The moment Jesus stepped into His assignment, news of Him spread like wildfire — His birth had already shaken the entire country because being born was itself part of His assignment.
  • David killed bears, lions, and a giant, yet no one knew — because none of it was yet connected to the assignment that would cause him to shine.

"No one can shine outside of their assignment. No one can shine outside of their assignment."

  • Money can open doors and provide access — but it does not guarantee brightness.
  • People who shine do so because of their assignment, not because of their career, wealth, or beauty.

Wrong Motivations for Shining

  • The world is filled with the pursuit of false shine — manufactured images, bought followers, and curated platforms — because people understand that shining brings influence, attention, and financial reward.
  • True light is defined by whether it leads people closer to God, builds better lives for others, and reflects the uplifting of the human race — anything less is shining for the wrong reason.
  • Every good and perfect gift comes from above — anything that genuinely uplifts the human race originates with God.

"Everyone is pursuing to shine, but they are ignoring the thing that makes you shine, which is your assignment. Not your job, not your beauty, not anything like that."

Satan's Fall From Assignment

  • Satan was already bright, already beautiful, adorned with every precious stone, and equipped with the instruments of worship within his being — God was seeking worshippers in spirit, and Satan possessed those spiritual tools.
  • Satan's fall was not caused by a lack of brightness — it was caused by corrupting his wisdom by reason of his brightness.
  • He forgot that his brightness derived from his assignment, and he began pursuing shine through domination, exaltation above others, and becoming like God.

"Satan went dark because he forgot his assignment. He forgot why he was here. Completely forgot it. If you forgot why you were created, you end up in darkness."

Finding Your Assignment Through Predestination

  • For whom God foreknew, He predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son — your entire life has already been set up toward this end.
  • The image of Jesus is light — "I am the light of the world" — meaning God's design for every believer in Christ is brightness conforming to the nature of Jesus.
  • All things work together for good for those called according to His purpose — the entirety of your circumstances is already arranged for the revealing of your assignment.

"Your whole life has already been set up. And that set up is to make you to conform to the image of his son. What is the image of Jesus? Light."

Your Assignment Is In Darkness

  • The light shines in darkness — not beside it, not above it, but within it.
  • Believers are not called to escape darkness but to operate inside it, because darkness is where the assignment lives.
  • There is no biblical promise of a light at the end of the tunnel — because the believer is the light that is supposed to shine in the tunnel.

"Your assignment is in darkness. You're trying to escape darkness. Yet you are called to be in darkness so that you can shine."

  • Isaiah 60 affirms that darkness will cover the earth and gross darkness the people — but the Lord rises upon His people and His glory is seen upon them in the midst of that darkness.

God Orchestrates Deeper Darkness for Greater Purpose

  • Joseph was not shining in his father's house — it was only when he entered Potiphar's house as a slave that his brightness began to emerge.
  • When God determined that Potiphar's house was not dark enough to reveal the fullness of Joseph's assignment, He orchestrated the scandal that sent Joseph to prison — the deeper darkness where Joseph discovered he was in Egypt to save a nation.
  • In prison, Joseph began to prophesy and operate in his gift for the first time — the gift that had been present since his father's house was only activated in the deepest darkness.

"Some of you will only realize your light when you are about to be evicted. Some of you will only realize your light when you are almost in your account. Some of you will realize your light and your brightness when you are divorced, when you are rejected, when you are at the bottom, and all people that loved you have lied on you. That's when you find purpose."

  • Jesus needed to be naked on the cross — in the deepest darkness — in order to be fully revealed as the Saviour of the world.
  • When God notices a believer is not entering their assignment, He turns up the darkness.

Light Only Appears In Darkness

  • In Genesis 1, darkness covered the face of the deep before God spoke — God waited until darkness was overwhelming before He said, "Let there be light."
  • Light only shows up when there is chaos — where there is no darkness, there is no need for light.
  • The darkest hour of Jesus was the greatest and most significant hour of His life; the darkest hour of any believer holds the same potential.

"Stop looking for light. You are the light of the world. You are supposed to let it shine. But how will you let it shine if there is no darkness? You don't light a candle in the daylight."

  • Many people come to Christ at their most difficult time because darkness forces the lighting of the light.
  • The brightest stars are the ones that are alone, where it is dark — proximity to other lights does not amplify brightness, it obscures it.

God Dwells In Thick Darkness

  • When Solomon dedicated the Temple, the glory of the Lord filled the house as a cloud so thick the priests could not stand to minister.
  • Solomon declared what God Himself had said: that He would dwell in thick darkness.
  • God's presence does not come with ambient light — it comes with an overwhelming cloud, and it is within that darkness that His glory is encountered.

"The glorious God dwells in thick darkness."

  • The closer a believer draws to the life of Jesus, the more things begin to feel strange and difficult — because they are entering into the presence of the One who inhabits thick darkness.

Embrace the Darkness — Not the Works of Darkness

  • Embracing darkness and embracing the works of darkness are two entirely different things — one is the posture of a believer operating in faith; the other is sin.
  • Darkness is not the absence of things — it is a blank canvas waiting for substance to be placed upon it; it is the condition in which God creates what does not yet exist.
  • God makes things go dark so that believers stop trying to build from what is visible around them — He wants to form a life revealed from above, not a life shaped by visible circumstances.

"You cannot shine until you understand darkness as your opportunity. Embrace the darkness. The light shine in darkness. If you keep fighting darkness, you're not going to shine."

  • When a person is in darkness and cannot see a way out, it is because God wants to make a way where there is no way — and He requires nothingness in order to create it.

Faith Requires Darkness

  • Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen — by definition, faith operates in the absence of visible reality.
  • In order for faith to function, the believer must be in a place of darkness — where the answer is not visible and the way forward cannot be seen.
  • Darkness is not a sign of abandonment — it is the precise environment in which God-given faith becomes operative and productive.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. So in order for faith to work, you need to be in darkness."

Key Definitions

Brightness — The visible expression of the light already within a believer's regenerated spirit, made manifest when they operate in their God-ordained assignment, particularly in conditions of darkness.

Assignment — The God-ordained purpose for which a person was predestinated; the specific field of darkness into which a believer is sent to shine, and the only context in which true brightness is revealed.

Peace — Not a feeling but information from God that surpasses all understanding; a knowledge anchored in eternal reality, accessible only through Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Comfort — The soothing of a person through their pain in the present moment, without revealing the future or providing the surpassing knowledge that constitutes true peace.

Darkness — Not the absence of things or the works of evil, but a blank canvas of nothingness that God uses as the creative condition for making what does not yet exist; the assignment field into which every believer is sent to shine.

Predestination — The divine pre-arrangement of a believer's entire life to conform them to the image of the Son — who is Himself the light of the world — so that God's glory is revealed through them.

Key Takeaways

  • You are already a light — the issue is whether you will allow your brightness to shine. A regenerated spirit carries illumination by nature; the work is not becoming a light but turning it on within your assignment.
  • No one can shine outside their assignment — not through money, career, beauty, or platform. External resources can open doors, but only the God-ordained assignment produces true brightness.
  • Your assignment is located inside your darkness, not beyond it. Fighting to escape darkness is fighting against the very environment where your purpose is activated and your light is needed.
  • God orchestrates increasing darkness to move you deeper into your assignment. What feels like a worsening situation is often God creating the conditions necessary for the fullness of your brightness to be revealed.
  • Faith is only operative in darkness — where nothing is visible, God creates what does not yet exist. Embracing darkness as a blank canvas is the posture that releases both faith and brightness.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what area of your life are you currently trying to escape darkness rather than recognising it as your assignment field — and what would change if you stopped running from it?
  2. Are you pursuing shine through external means — career advancement, social media presence, money, or appearance — while neglecting to identify and step into your God-ordained assignment?
  3. Joseph did not discover his prophetic gift until prison. What is the darkest season of your life right now, and what assignment might God be trying to reveal to you within it rather than after it?
  4. What does it look like practically for you to "let" your light shine this week — not through prayer alone, but through the permission and allowance Jesus says is already in your hands?
  5. Satan lost his brightness by pursuing it for the wrong reasons. Honestly examine your own motivations: are you seeking to shine for the glory of God, or for the attention, influence, and reward that shining can bring?
